Yeah, the sockets that look like they've melted. I bought a set second hand about 40 years ago and they had an old school ratchet you pushed a square drive bit though it one way for tighten and pushed the other way to loosen ya nuts

Further update after going through & sorting them out.

Mostly came up pretty well (well, 10000000000000% better than previously! ;D).

Looking at one spanner though, that I know was my Grandad's as it's always been in the bottom of the tool box (although I don't remember it ever being used ???). It was very heavily rusted, to the extent you couldn't see a thing on it, but it's now gone back to a plain grey surface.

Looking at it, you can see that it's size is 1/2 - 7/16 W, but I couldn't see a make until I grabbed a magnifying glass!, then could just make out "The Billings & Spencer Co., Hartford, Conn. USA", together with a trade mark.

Called up Mr G for some help, & found this site, which some of you may be interested in, if you have old tools etc: http://alloy-artifacts.org/index.html

That tells me that that particular style of brand was used by Billings & Spencer between ... 1915 & 1926!!! :o

For a bit of background, after Pop was injured at Gallipoli, while serving with the Light Horse, he was transferred to become an MT Driver in France, as he was one of the very few soldiers during WW1 who could drive! After he came home, I know he stayed as a truckie during the 20s & 30s, & then through WW2, where he worked on building airfields right through Qld.

I just wish I knew how / when he got hold of this one ??? Did he requisition it from the Yanks in France ??? ;D Did it accidentally fall into his kitbag as he was coming home ??? Was it part of the tool kit on one of his trucks, or did he buy it (& where did you buy vehicle tools back then ??? - there certainly wasn't a SuperCrap on every corner!)

I know it's been said many times, but if only it could talk!

& I think this one may have to go straight to the Pool Room! (even though we don't have one! ;D)

Oh, while we're on the subject, #2 is the Imperial-sized side of the bench!

Fizz, Clean that spanner right up an maybe give it a good coating of Pennetrol  and mount it ...   Make up a nice glass faced lacquered timber display case,  add in a laminated  printed sheet, detailing with words and photo's of Grandads service and trucking days ..

Not my shed, Cobb + Co Museum's shed.

Interesting week so far in the museum. Providing demonstrations for 3 to 8 year olds attending an "Olden Festival".

Yesterday in the blacksmith shop & other days carving a rocking horse. Some great conversations have been had. Last day tomorrow.

Best answer from a student today.

I passed around a piece of cow tail so they could feel the texture.

Teacher asks, what does it feel like.

Little Johnny. "Feels like our toilet brush"

I had a couple of questions I would have liked to ask but bit my tongue.

Teacher moved on very quickly lol.

More weight added to the truck  ...  Finaly got the Flexi solar panel on and wired up for the Lithium battery set up .. Bit rough and ready and  a tidy up still to do,  but its  bolted on.
Not putting in any charge in though  due to the batteries being fully charged ..
Feels a bit  flash for us, having everything  set up as a permanent fixture on the truck instead of being portable and added when needed ..
Hopefully this 200W panel does aswell as this guys, Got it from the same mob, so we will see .    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-sc4rlV93g&t=466s   .. If not its only < $100 out of pocket .

What are the tools in the second last photo?
Looks like they are for heating or burning?

Vintage blowtorches. Used kero from memory and were pressurised by a hand pump a bit like a two litre pressure sprayer.

The one on left still has the hook that a soldering iron could hook into to hold the tip in the flame. Talking about soldering irons that didn't have that plastic tube attached to allow the green steam to run up & heat the tip like these new fangled ones have these days.

sparksy

I still take a soldering iron like the one on right away in tool kit,  only time used it was to repair punctured fuel tank on my Holden Overlander about 30 years ago but still carry it.

Way to good for a garage sale.
Do your homework and should be able to sell as a bulk lot a dealer.
