Well, it wasn't today - it was yesterday.
I had such a good plan. I was, and I repeat was, going to do a bit of 12V wiring reorganisation in the camper as well as give its wheel bearings a bit of a going over. I had my new wiring diagram on my tablet and I had everything for the wheel bearings together so I was ready to go.....

So I got into the shed and geez it was cold. Cranked up the all-in-one Chinese Diesel heater and put the jug on. Disconnected the batteries and made myself a cuppa and sat down with it which is where it all went wrong.

It was getting nice and warm and I was lured into reading a bit more of my e-book while I had my coffee. After a while it was time for a little nap. By then all of my allotted "shed time"  had been used.

Yesterday's accomplishments ? A big fat NIL....

ha ha ha..... we took it to Fraser Island on our boat, "What's The Rush?"

That's a few years ago now..... it was fun to be part of it.

Now i think about it, i think Mrs Jeepers even made a little bikini for it.

Coming in this afternoon on the boat with Tom Toastie (Now Tomaseena) and we had two dolphins run alongside for a while.

We were in the 6 knot/no wash section and the crazy buggers sat beside the duck board about maybe 6 or 8 inches under the water and just cruised along for a couple of hundred metres with us.

Pretty cool I thought and made Mrs Jeepers and myself smile.

Who did the drawing? Pretty cool.

I remember now, Astrid renamed Tom to Tomaseena when she made the bikini for it.

We're away next week so I'll drop them in the big plastic tray, cover them up & leave them soaking.

So, after leaving them soaking in a tub full of vinegar for ~11 days!!!, just had a look & ...

Don't know if I'm brave enough to reach in there & see if anything at all is still in one piece!

I'd go with a wash off (with a stiff brush from memory)and then oil them. Mightn't hurt to rinse with Bi-carb to neutralise the vinegar, but probably not necessary. Wear gloves, they will be covered in fine black sludge, and it's a bugger to get off your hands.

sparksy

Instead of oiling them , Ive had a lot off success with spraying them with silicon dry spray. I had a few large 18"+ shifters  which were rusted, sandblasted them at work then sprayed with silicon spray. Been about 5 years now with no other coatings and still no sign of rust.

Fizzie

What an absolute cow of a job that was! ::)

Happy with the results though ;D

After soaking them in the vinegar (for 2 weeks!), rinsed then off in Bicarb / water mix for times ranging from a few minutes (too short as surface rust reappeared) up to overnight (I CBF taking them out yesterday arvo!), then gave them a spray with Lanox & all appear OK - at least, much, much better than they were! 8)

In some cases though, as well as the rust, it's also lifted the chrome off, sometimes in actual pieces! :'( Unfortunately, Sidchrome appear to be the worst hit with this ???

Now that I can actually read what's on them, it turns out there are quite a few Dowidat & Sidchrome in there, Gordon Tools from Sheffield, England & Heyco, West Germany, some of which are also marked Mercedes Benz!, plus more from Taiwan & Japan.

I thing I will say though, when Paul said wear gloves ^, I'll upgrade that to full, rubber washing-up gloves, because the vinegar goes through disposable latex even better than it does rust! ::) My hands look like I'm getting ready for a Brown & White Minstrels show! ;D

Couple of interesting ones came out though as per the photos, where the metal of the sockets has actually been eaten away!

I'm not sure if they were normal sockets though as slanted sides rather than straight ??? There were only these two (unless others are now just part of the sludge in the bottom of the tray! ;D), so who knows ???

You should give this method a go. Works well, and pretty quick too. But you can't just dunk the tools in and forget about them.

Way too technical & complicated! ;D

Although that drill bit is amazing!

Another method is to use molasses.

Interesting

& here is what was left in the bottom of the tub after we emptied the vinegar out on the weeds!

The bicarb / water tub was similar. It was a bit like panning for gold, with all the little bits of chrome sparkling in the sunlight ;D
