Hey Keith,

I was having trouble with mine a while back.

Next time it's out, have a look at the pin holes in the hitch and the receiver. Rattling around can cause the pin to burr the holes on the front of the hitch, and on the rear of the receiver. The burrs then catch on each other, making the hitch a bugger to withdraw.

Knock/grind/file the burrs off and all will be good as new....assuming it's the same issue.....

Geoff, you've seen the hitch referred to in the original post haven't you?
I've seen it from a distance at Mansfield.
Does it have a bolt that tightens the inserted tongue in the receiver on the car?
Or is xcvator talking about the tow ball and the coupling it fits into?
I cannot imagine that xcvator would be confused by a grub screw and lock nut on the top of the coupling.
Or that he'd try to uncouple it while the release handle was locked down.

You didn't leave the tennis ball on the tow ball when you dropped the caravan onto the hitch did you xcvator?

He can't be too worried about his ball(s), cause he hasn't replied and explained ??

Perhaps his ball(s) is OK now ??

I really appreciate all the help you have so lovingly provided   :-*
No, there is no tennis ball stuck on the
, ball and yes the receiver is not locked down
So what is the best way to adjust. the receiver so that the ball doesn't jamb on the. ball  ;D

If it hasn't got a grub screw on the coupling you can't adjust it without taking it apart and machining it.
There are a heap of the 50mm couplings that can not be adjusted, only lubricated.
If you machine it, you will make it looser.

100% correct.
The bottom of the coupling hasn't been hit, causing it to deform inwards has it?

Keith, are you using an old 2" ball in a 50mm coupling?

I thought about that, but they are usually clearly marked and I thought he'd notice.
Seeing as a 2" ball is actually 52mm. it'd be a bit tight.
You might need a jemmy bar to help you get it off.

2" = 50.8mm. Close enough that it may fit.

Used to see this years ago when blokes would use a ball they got from their dad 'cos they were too tight to buy the correct size.

He would certainly be old enough to have 2" balls. Come on Keith your letting the towball fan club down, we strive on the simplicity and ease of use of the humble towball, there are not many of us left.
Could you not borrow a receiver/ball assembly and try it, if your still away, surely someone in the "caravan park" would lend you one 🤣🤣🤣 All in jest mate

The ball is a 50mm. The hitch is to suit a 50mm ball. The hitch does have a grub screw and locknut on it but I've never ever had to adjust 1 before so this is a new experience for me  8)

???

Is the lock mechanism fully retracting?

Maybe try retracting or removing the grub screw and see if it improves.

One of these jiggers??

http://www.ozanda.com.au/trailer-coupling-hitch-50mm-2000kg-over-ride-galvanized

Hold the screw with a screw driver, back off the lock nut and then back off the screw 1/2 a turn. Tighten the nut to lock it down again.
See if that helps.

xcvator

Ok, so I've undone the lock nut, screwed in the grub screw as far as it would go,dropped the hitch onto the ball and then backed off the grub screw untill the hitch fully dropped onto the ball and the lock would engage and then did up the locknut. Don't know untill tomorrow whether unhitching will be easier
