We are heading off for Nat meet tomorrow and thought it would be a good opportunity to get weighed as we are fully setup.

What should I weigh..
The car and trailer (while hitched) on the scales.
The trailer on the scales, still hitched, and car off ? Or trailer on scales unhitched ?

Any other combinations ? Towball I will do separately.

Weigh the car & trailer connected
Then disconnect the car and weigh trailer solo
This will give you combined weight, trailer weight and car weight.

When we did it, it was

Car & trailer combined = GCVM

Drive car off bridge but leave trailer hooked up = trailer weight (sorry, can't think of term :-[)

Disconnect trailer & stand on jockey wheel = ATM

ATM - trailer weight = ball weight

If you dont have to pay for every weigh then drive the front axle on then weigh drive the whole car on and weigh then the back axle then put the trailer on and take it off the car weigh the complete trailer then hook it back up and move forward again and weigh the trailer axle load, thats what i do at Broadford every time i go up the Hume cause its free. While your doing that have the missus pull out the thermos and make a cuppa because if your weights are like mine you're gunna need a cuppa

If you have time...

Weight front axle only, than the car only with trailer fitted, than take weight off the ball, than car and trailer and finish with just trailer.

Make sure if you're weighing the car, that you have all occupants in it - see the Fat Swaggers thread for why - and all fuel/fluids in it.

When we did our car and trailer before Tassie we weighed in at 3000kg GCM, and the trailer was 760kg with a nose weight of 80kg, so pretty much spot on. We had 50 litres of fuel and 30 litres of water in the car, as well as both of us (me 96kg-ish and wife 65kg ish)

Would it be possible for the organizers of the national meet to arrange a set of load bars and a digital read out at the gate for people to drive over as they come in.  Weigh each axle front, rear, trailer and you can calculate everyting from those 3 weights.  If you want ball weight un hook the trailer while the rear axle is on the load bars.  Take about 10 minutes or less per rig.  This is how they split weigh trucks on a small weighbridge.
Just my 2 cents worth
Enjoy the meet.  Hope toget there one day

Hi all

If you're going to use the one on the Hume at Broadford, be careful.  its really just a drive on and drive off as its quite busy and if you stuff around measuring towball weights, you'll get abused.  I did....!

That said, you can learn a lot from that system.  You can measure GCM, GVM and axel loadings of the tow vehicle.  You can measure against GTM and axel group loading of the trailer.  If you're under all those, that's 90% of it taken care of.
