Keeping the dog in!

Evening Swaggers,

Well I have a 4 year old American Staffy bitch (fixed) that can jump an 8 Ft fence!

She started jumping it about 1 year ago, so I put up shelf brackets fastened to each post with wire running between each., which stopped her!

Now she has started jumping again because she knows that there is a new dog next door and there is another on the other side!

My question is, has anyone used any form of dog electric shock fence or any other form of fence to stop their dog from jumping the fence?!

We hate seeing her tied up, but she knows why we do it.

Mate, if you can beg borrow or steal an electric fence unit for a week go for it, that will stop her. I had a property several years ago with electric fences to help keep foxes out, my dog stuck his nose on it twice

never again. Even 3 years later when I had shifted you could lay a piece of wire on the ground and the dog wouldn't walk/jump over it, he'd walk around it.
Just be prepared for the screaming yelp when she hits it

Invisible fence(or hidden fence). Google it.
It kept my neighbours dogs out of my yard while the fence was rebuilt.

Does she do it when you are home?

If not and only when you are out you can house her in the laundry or shed with her bed and water and toys and leave a radio on.

As soon as you get home bring her back with the family.

Generally they are more relaxed being in a 'cave' than outside tied up. Problem with staffies is they are VERY strong willed so you may struggle even with electric containment. In the end she may have to live somewhere else for her own sanity.

We live on 8 acres and have an electric fence unit for the horses. When we had our staffy x she used to dig out. I put some tape around the bottom of the fence. They touched it once and never went near anything that looked like electric fence tape again!

She will normally do it when I go out, not the SWMBO or the kids!

She is very aggressive against other dogs when I have her, but when the SWMBO takes her for a walk, she is no where near as bad. The SWMBO said that she is protecting me cause I am her property.

Thats not a bad idea! I might get some surprise sex tape and run it alone the shelf holder I have and hang some string off it to put her off!

I'll give anything a go!

I've hear of people making a home made electric fence energiser out of a flasher can and a coil out of an old car. I don't know how to wire it all up but you could probably google it.

I have a Petsafe fence around our 3.5 acres. Our Border Collie wears a collar that gives him a warning when he is about 2 metres from the boundary and he (now) stops. If he was to keep going, he would get a 12V jolt. They are expensive systems but they work.

The one I have seen is dug into the ground, is yours? Or can you nail to to a fence as well?

Any info would help!

I caved in a couple of years ago and built an outdoor run that had a shadecloth roof one end and weatherproof roof the other end.
Over time we had a passionfruit vine grow up through the mesh and it looks OK. that's it in the corner

Get the elec fence mate, string it on the fence if she is a jumpper , when she jumps up on fence and gets the zapp a few times they learn quick.

My dog still thinks any white tape is electrified LOL

I had ours on for a week then off for 6 mths and he never tried again after a few zapps,

We had a staffy who Was a Beautiful dog but we couldn't leave him for 5 minutes. We got an electric fence and he had a collar for it.

Well, it didn't stop Duke. He would dig under, climb over, chew the wire fence and even the electric wire.

Our beautiful dog is now living in a home with big wooden fences and has only escaped a few times.

we had a shock collar on our kelpie, battery went flat and he did a runner , ended up at RSPCA $300 later to be released they wouldn't give back the collar as they stated they were illegal - not sure what the story is ...

Like lino6 said we have the electric fence for the horses and have set up the back yard for the dogs the 5 year old Shepherd who came to live with us this year got out over the top twice but we have put wire up there too and she had already hit the other wire and knew what that meant. Has stayed in since, ours is mains powered so probably gives a kick. You can now buy solar powered units if you don't have somewhere to plug in a mains unit or you can get ones that run off a car battery. Around the yard we just have the thin rope looking wire not the flat stuff but you could use either. Good luck and great you are doing something to keep her in. I have known in the past of dogs who just got out daily and not a lot was done to stop them.

Going to have a look at a farm produce place to see how I go with getting a fence. I only need about 30m because she only jumps the fence on one side!

We had a collar type unit for ours staffy, he was too stupid to realise why some thing was stinging him when he went near the fence. He would put up with it and walk right through.

Proper electric fence with tape, a few zaps and a bit of yelping later and hasn't got out since.

same here we had the shock collar fence $300+ for our staffy. she worked out if she ran flat out over it she would only get zapped once. once she was the other side of it she would never come back. total waste of money and so was the fence.

Mine Maly is 50KG and I can vouch for them being hard work to begin with ..until about 3years old he was very hard work but the last 4 years have seen him turn into an awesome dog.

DO NOT get a huski or MalY if you dont want to put the time into them ..they must be integrated into a family unit / pack structure and this includes every part of thier lives.

unfortunately most like the "look" then leave them in the yard for 10 yrs a day with no interaction and spend less than 2 hrs a day with them ..I think If people are time poor which is part of life these days then buy a breed that's not so heavily reliant on a pack structure for development.

Starvy, I will have a look in the shed i may still have the fence unit which you are welcome to borrow to see if it works for a few months.

Cheers Jet!! I'm on my way to sydney for work for a few weeks. I'll let the SWMBO know about it. We just keep her tied up now and let her off when we are in the back yard for long periods of time, so about three times a day.

Mine is nailed to the wooden fence in parts, wound around a strand of barbed wire in others and the only parts under the ground are in the gateways.

I've seen that rolling pin method used to keep cats in as well. They painted the PVC to match the colour of their fence. Been very tempted to do it at our place, but never quite got around to it.
