There is a commercial version of the rolling pin method available, aimed at cats and would, in theory,  seem to be effective.  It consists of aluminum tube mounted on solid posts with plastic bearings inside the tube at each end.
The DYI version shown seems to be a good way to go.  I think it should work.  Wire center being extra taut would be the key so it does not sag when the dog puts his paws on it.

It does upto 2KM the roll of the rope has been cut up by my mate so depending on how long the run is you may need just the rope but I think for along 1 fence you will find a piece long enough.

Your dog has spearation anxiety. Ours had the same thing. The dog thinks it is it's role to look after you. When you go out, the dog can't do the job so it has to go looking for you.  We got a dog whisperer. It was expensive, but worked 100% Ours ripped through a stud wall. Now she doesnt give a rats arse when I go out.

+ 1 for the electric fence. My 2 cattle dogs used get out every other day until I ran a single strand of electric fence along the bottom. They only touched it once and have never got out since!

We had a dog that continuously dug out from one of my Dads yards, he was supposed to be guarding it and would then take off to the pound to meet all his lady friends. To cure the problem we got a chain around 12 feet long and tethered it to an empty milk crate. He had to drag the thing around the yard all night long, after a while he stopped digging holes. Also saved a lt of cartons for the pound boss

The guy across the road also had the same problem when new neighbours moved in who also had a dog. They solved the problem by cutting out a section of the timer fence and making it into a gate. So during daylight hours Monday to Friday the gate is open and both dogs play together in both yards.
