I think he was referring to inventions we've all come up with, not the mainstream stuff.

Great idea , but is it legal welding onto a tow hitch like that? How much does it move around while your driving? I don't know about wall thickness , but it looks like 50x50 RHS. If it was me I would have some gussets and something under the wheel to take the weight instead of just the studs/bolts or whatever is holding it now. Insurance might be another problem if it decided to part company with your tug. I hope I'm wrong because I do like the idea for the camper.  ???
The tow hitch was off a Patrol and longer than the VW one.   The VW will accept 350kg ball weight and the wheel plus Jayco weighs less than that.   There was a little free play, which couldn't be avoided to allow the hitch to swing.   I think there is only about 1-2cm sideways movement at the top of the wheel.   Dad (the inventor) used to make mobile crane jibs from scratch, so I trust his expertise when it comes to how strong to make it.

Please take this the way it is intended. There is a set of rules for lifting and there is another for carrying. Mobile cranes are designed for loading/unloading trucks etc. so I don't doubt Dads spare holder would be strong enough to support the spare for years. Once you put carrying into the mix , the rules change. You have a wheel about 15-20kg hanging off a piece of steel about 300mm long , so that's where the flex comes into it. I might be wrong but I don't think a mobile crane can travel with a load, so flex doesn't come into it.Before you ask, yes,I have worked with steel. I don't care if I'm right or wrong , just make sure your butt is covered insurance wise.

No, I didn't take it the wrong way, and I don't want to sound overly defensive.   I have no idea at all about welding.   I mentioned Dad's experience as he was a fitter & turner by trade and has built things that lift many tonnes.   Crane jibs are a couple of orders of magnitude above this piece.   You see a lot of similar carriers on the web, both DIY and commercial designs and this one is at the heavier end of the spectrum.   I reckon my alloy wheel is not much heavier than three or four bicycles and your standard 4-bike carrier is quite a bit lighter and wobblier that this wheel carrier.   Also, the carrier wasn't for everyday use but it was only ever put on for trips.   It'a all academic now as I no longer have the Touareg.   Thanks for your valid concern; we all need to look out for each other.

Fridge slide for a 100 series cruiser.

For a 40 L engel buy some 12mm ply and cut to just a bit larger than the 40L engel.  Go to a Big W or K mart and buy 2 skate boards with the wide wheels.  I paid around $12 each.

Remove the wheels and rebolt them to the ply equal distant width and in line.  The bolts fit perfectly.

Fridge slides real easily across the carpet and either set of wheels just drops into the small gap when the tail gate is down.  Fridge then sits on the tail gate for easy access.  All up cost about $30.

Kiwipride is this the ladder you asked a about.

I brought a standard six or seven Step, step ladder,  pulled it apart, cut it down and then made what I wanted. :D

A piece of blue tack on the side of the thermostat knob on the Engel to hold it set, a little bump soon turns everything soft into iceblocks

Mine is just a 10 watt solar panel plugged into the charge socket of a cheap jump pack from super cheap. I put a USB plug in the cig socket and use it to charge iPhone , iPad , iPod camera batteries and my phone . In the last three months I've had to charge the iPad on power twice. Cost all up was less than $70. I was going to say $69 but there are too many twisted people on here. No wonder it feels like home.

I used to blame the kids for years for playing with the thermostat, till I figured out when you open and shut the lid the transit cover sometimes catches the dial. Only mine usually turns up and starts freezing stuff. Blue tac sounds like the answer. Thanks.

Mine would have to be (might not be my idea but I thought of it one day and did it) my throne. I cut the bottom out of a milk crate and cable tied a toilet seat (with lid) from the green shed. We use this when camping remote on the beach! The kids love it as you can go up in the dunes and do a poo with a view!
