should i buy a 1999 100 4.5l

  HI SWAGGERS, HAVEN'T BEEN ON HERE FOR A WHILE CAUSE I SOLD MY VITARA 14MONTHS AGO. BUT AFTER GOING ON A BOYS WEEKEND WITH MY MATE IN HIS V8 HUNNGY I AM NOW VERY ITCHY. AM GOING TO LOOK AT A 4.5L MAN 100 SERIES WITH 240KS ON THE CLOCK PRETTY STOCK APART FROM A 2" LIFT FOR ABOUT $10,000. I DON'T WANT DIESEL OR A V8 AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME 2 GOOD REASONS TO SAVE 2G AND BUY AN 80 INSTEAD OF AN EARLY 100.

What do you have against a V8?
If it is the drinking issue, I think the 4.5 straight 6 has a bigger drinking problem with less power.

The 4.5 is getting old and has a thirst. It's not a bad engine if maintained properly. I would steer clear of an 80 only for the reason that I would want to buy the latest model with the lowest Km's I could afford in your scenario.

If the engine goes your $10k purchase will soon double. The V8's are latter tech and have proven reliable. Diesel would be my pick, but you said you didn't want that.

I had a an 80 GXL 4.5 auto, the only memory I have of it was how many times I had to put fuel in it and how few Km's I got when travelling especially towing.

Buy an awesome 60 series with your 10k. You will get a great factory turbo diesel one with reasonable KM's for the money. I have had two (a petrol and non turbo diesel) and they were awesome. Much more capable than their leaf sprung under pinnings suggest.

Plus they are retro cool now

They are a simple tough unit worth considering. Rust is the only issue to watch for, but there are plenty of good ones.

That seems cheap for one of that model. Is that a mates rates deal, or are there some other unknown issues?
Cruza Driver sold his on here a while ago, it was on gas and a very well looked after vehicle with a lot of extras for 17k. His post has been deleted, so can't link to it.

Is it going to be your main driver? Or is it going to sit in the shed for weekend work. If the latter, then mite be the way to go. If its a daily, upkeep may be a killer. i have always said buy as new as you can in the best condition you can find for the $$$. By that I mean, buy an older vehicle if its shmicko and been looked after.

While you are mentioning it.
A friend has a 60 serie and has cut out the rusty bits on the roof.
An "adviser" told him to wait for another 60 serie and use the parts from that one.
Problem is, all 60 serie cars has the same issue.........
He is now thinking of selling it.

Depends on the models mate. The latter ones didn't have anywhere near the issues. Mine had no rust in the roof whatsoever. In fact neither of mine had any rust at all. One was a one owner jobbie the other had been used and abused.

There are plenty of good ones available.

Gotta love the sixty, I saw a nice restored one out at Birdsville last year. Ol mate had rebuilt from ground up and was very happy.

For a boys toy I would buy one over a 80. Just 83 and up for the five speed.

Great car the 100 4.5, yes the like a drink, but he diesel variant will cost you $15k more, which s a sh1t load of petrol.  If its in good order, go for it!

Mate i've owned a '98 4.5ltr Auto Petrol 100 series for the last 7 yrs or so, never let me down, yep it does like a drink, but all big 4x4's do,  looking at averages between diesel variants there's not a whole lot of difference in overall fuel consumptions....... plus at the time it was $10 - $15,000 cheaper then the same model in diesel.
Every now and then i think, "geez i'm getting a bit tired of the fuelling this big girl up" and i dare to go looking at alternatives, i sit in a few other cars, and they all feel like i'm taking a step down in comfort, room etc....... so back to the Cruiser i go.....

I love my 2000 4.5L, its done 160,000klm and never missed a beat.  Yes, it does use a lot of fuel, but it does everything I want it too.

So, I looked her up and down and all over and took it for a drive. I decided not to buy it at this moment due to: air con not working, dent in roof scruffy around the areas off entry in the back seats, oil/grease stain on carpet in back, a little bit oily around the rear main, tyres a bit balder than I was told and the front spring were rusting/ corroding (not sure if this is normal for pedders springs). It did drive nice and go good but just didn't feel like handing over 10g especially with only 4 week rego.
