We think the damage was caused by the air conditioner compressor seizing up putting pressure on the motor causing the problem. I went to the mechanics and he showed me the damage with all the metal shavings in the sump.

Still in negotiations with them re price and I am pretty sure I can get the bill down to around $9000 as I also need a new air conditioner compressor.

Re building the motor is out of the question as I work weekends and don't have the facilities to work on the motor.

Well Mark that is 2K better off i your pocket.  For the aircon, ring this guy Joe reyes, 0407 628 562.  Does good aircon work and is the cheapest in Cairns.  A mate ofmone put  me on to him a few years ago when we first moved up here.
Very happy with his work and prices.

Not good Mark, but you would rather it happen close to home rather than the middle of nowhere, what better way to run it in then across the top

Mr McGirr,

Buy new motor, stick in Cruiser.

Keep old motor, rebuild yourself slowly, and stick it in a go-kart when done (although, to be honest, that's my solution for any left-over motors that happen to be lying about). It would be a hell of a ride!

Cheers,
Matto :)

what model cruiser is it? If only the bottom end is shagged do you want to sell the cylinder head to off set some more $$$ ? I need a head for my 80 series petrol motor :)

Indeed, but no way I could do it for $12k. I'd probably have to pay someone to do it too, and then the car is off the road for that long, etc. Plus you have to live with one of the gauges never working, and the cruise control not running right, or XYZ. I've had a imported car before, and it was hard enough getting parts for that and having to explain "well, the motor is from this Aus-delivered car, but the suspension is more like that one...". It's good fun, but living with them day-to-day can be annoying. Having an uncommon engine conversion would be even worse, I'd expect.

When I toasted the engine in the FIL's ute, he had it swapped for a reco engine exactly the same. Was the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to get the car moving again. Also, you know that it will be exactly the same as it was before. Whilst I can see the attraction of setting up to a better motor, I can also appreciate just doing a straight swap. A week later the car was back on the road, all done and dusted.

Cheers,
Matto :)

McGirr,

I haven't swapped an engine since about '88, and then I think it cost me $800- to keep the Mrs, mighty Corolla up and running.

Just wondering how you know, how many klms on the engine your buying these days?

Regards,

Barrabart.

Brunswick Diesel in WA do the V8 Chevy Diesel conversions and the engines taken from the vehicles have stuff all km's on them might pay to give them a call ( if not to late ), as I am sure they would have plenty.

My error there Mark, I missed the "reconditioned engine" bit in your previous post..... I was thinking you were going for an "exchange" type engine, like an import low klm donk, I've always wondered as a buyer, how a fella is to know where or what the true history behind those engines are...?

most dont have a choice due to budget limits.
I know a bill of $11,000 would ruin many of my mates. they would probably sell their car as parts.

I had to make a decision either sell the car for parts , its in great condition and set up how I want it, buy another second hand one or bite the bullet and get the repairs done. I decided to get the repairs done.

I have had 2 other quotes and will be seeing the owner of the mechanics place on Monday to compare prices. The company does all our company cars. Talking to the mechanics there they reckon it would be close to the other quotes of around the $8600. I still have to get a new air conditioner compressor on top of this and have been quoted about $700 fitted , re gassed etc.

Monday is discussion day  ;D

Mate I recall you got that cruiser for a great price, add the price of the new engine job to the purchase price, and you've still got a bargain (with a bloody new engine)......... should serve you well for many years to come, all this will just be a bump in the road.
