My digital readout for my lathe turned up from China today. Mounted the easy bit (the display) and spent a lot of time thinking about how to mount up the glass scales.

Rod I used to fit read outs to a lot of older machines. If no milled pads are present I would use square bits of 10mm plate (ground plate best ),  drill four counter sinks to mount plate to the machine and three or four holes taped 3 or 4mm then use grub screws as jacks. Clock up the plates with a dial indicator until both within a couple of thou and mount the scales to that. Worked a treat every time.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

I was going to suggest maybe a little OCD'sh, but the fishing rod handles aren't quite lined up right, so maybe just a rental.
The handles don't but maybe the tips do!

Gave the bbq a good clean. Finished wiring up the double 12v socket to the battery in the Camper and also put it a power point for 240v for when we Camp the boring way at a Caravan Park. Starting with good friends next weekend at Stansbury.

Finally put in a rotisserie (runs off 2 x 'D' Cell Batteries) on my bbq I made a few weeks back. Here's a pic of the important part of today's work.

Finally got the DRO scale fitted up to the lathe cross slide after all my thinking... took me 3 days on and off.

and with the cover removed

Jimmy thanks I will do something like that on the X axis along the bed (hopefully tomorrow!). Should be easy!

The thinking was all about the cross slide which was tricky as it had to extend beyond the slide at the back.

Started off with some 6mm Ally plate milled away to leave access to the gib screws.

drilled and tapped a couple of holes in the cross slide  :-*

countersunk one hole behind the scale so the scale would be flush with the mounting strip.

Front hole, is visible and I slotted the hole to allow adjustment to get the scale square (to 0.02mm which will do me!).

Milled up a block of ally to mount the sensor to the saddle.

and tidied up the cable with another drilled and tapped hole in the saddle to mount a cable clamp

The covers have a mounting flange which I cut off and had to drill and tap 3mm holes in a 6mm wide piece of ally, but it all worked out good!

I would have liked to have used a coutersunk screw but the head would have overhung the mounting plate but it looks nice!

I had a bit of trouble getting the scale to work correctly as I had no adjustment on the sensor mount. But after adding a few shims and gentle cursing it is perfect!

I centrepunched the holes for the X axis scale but decided to be patient and tackle it in the morning when I am fresh!

EDIT: Ooops forgot to show you the readout

Finally got the roofrack finished and mounted to the trailer. I  now have some space on my shed floor again after the large roofrack sitting on the floor in there for 6 months.

Hey Campa,
I used standard trailer spring hangers as mounts on the hinge side of the racks. I had some old tube steel from a gate and found a set of bushes at supercheap from hq Holden era springs that fitted the 25mm internal diameter of the tube. These became the pivots/hinges. On the other side I made a cradle for the foot of the rack to sit in and over-center latches front and rear hold it down. It has gas struts to assist the lift as well.

Looked at my tigerz air compressor as the hose was split (own stupid fault didn't disconnect it before shoving back into milk crate) finally got the hose off after plenty of swearing and cursing but then dropped all the ball bearings out and are never to be found.  Looks like I will need to go shopping to get a new quick connect r maybe I will replace the spirally hose

Thanks mate. Interesting comment. It is a Ditron from China via AliExpress. I went with them because I had seen one of their slim line scales in a glass cabinent at Hare and Forbes and it was a lot smaller than some of the Meister etc ones ex Singapore. The smaller scale is exactly what this lathe required (Hafco AL320G).

I paid a bit more for a full metal case on the display. I wonder if Easson are rebadged Ditrons? Cost me $438 landed (plus $11 for a 4m  length of 10x10mm ally today because I had to space the  cover out past of the mounting blocks I made. Machined them at a 1° angle which meant I did not need to add the grub screws I had made provision for.

Thanks guys. The rack is actually pretty light. I can easily lift it myself when it stands on it's side so I would say maybe 30-35kg. The struts are 1100n each (roughly 110kg each I'm led to believe) so it should lift easily withe the kayaks on.

Went into my shed last night for first time in couple of weeks to get daughters ex-Fuji pushy out for a ride..

Found that 2x plastic 2-10ltr fuel drums had expanded in the heat last week, and knocked a 5ltr of engine oil off the shelf, lid comes off, and leaked all over the floor..

YAY FOR ME......

Grafy,
I am convinced that a rack such as this is the 'ducks guts' for carrying kyaks / bikes / Jerry cans, rather on the roof of the tug. :cup:
*  Easier to load and unload
*  Less danger of injury
*  Balance centred over trailer axle, so minimal increase in ball weight
*  Therefore can carry heaps of gear without any impact on GVM and only minimal increase (~10% of added weight) on GVM
Depending on how heavy your trailer is in the first place should still be well within the 2 tonne allowance for a trailer (with over ride breaks) or 2.5 tonne ('break-away' brakes)
WELL DONE!

Yep, I'm very happy with it. It really sucks trying to put kayaks/canoes up onto car roofracks and like you say, it's a lot safer and easier on top of the camper. The camper is just over the tonne as it sits, so still a fair bit of capacity available.

Cheers
