Jam on the trailer brake override, keep a light throttle, and steer with the sway, not against it.

The trailer being slowed, and the car trying to pull, should pull thing back into line. then pull into the next car yard and buy a bigger car, or a smaller van.

Driver training should be compulsory at point of purchase for all large vans. It would be a tiny cost to be included in the sale price. I'm sure most people would be happy to allow a couple of hours on the day they collect their new van to be trained how to drive with it safely.
And van sellers should have legal responsibilities for supplying over sized vans knowing they are going to be towed by undersized vehicles.

A co worker and hubby cashed in the house and bought a cruiser and a big off road van and headed off on a year + away, tried everything to convince them to do a couple of  handling courses etc with it first as the hubby had only towed a 6x4 box trailer once about 20 years before hand and had never been off road at all .. But the old I know what I'm doing I'm not an idiot was the reply .
Their out there somewhere in the heat haze and with luck wont take anyone or themselves out on their journey .
