    I've seen a video of an old Indian freight truck being started with a similar method.
Jack rear wheel, ign on, neutral gear.
Rope through the dual rear wheels, spin as fast as possible.
Declutch, high gear, engage clutch and bingo - noise and smoke!

I've acually done it in an old gemini out the back of Credo station stalled in a dry creekbed. The station was 650,000 acres and I was about 120km from the homestead. Couldn't spin the wheel by hand so I stuck 2 wheel braces on opposing nuts and used a big stick to spin it. It took a bit of mucking around but eventually got it going. Third gear, big heave and a dash to the front to hit the gas peddle. It caught and rolled off the jack but I got it going. Dangerous? Sure, but it sure beat sitting there in 45deg heat with my finger up my bum.
