Prado Vs Territory

Horses for courses. For a quick trip tp see the grandkids, we use the Territory. As a point to point on bitumen, it's a trop vehicle. Otherwise, having the best of both worlds, it's a choice between my GQ work truck or an 80 Wagon I brought of a mate last year just for touring. I'ts set up for towing a van and it does the job well.
As for suggesting upgrading the Territory, I don't even go there. It's HERS.

I should add a bit there. The Territory tows a vintage Cavalier Camper, doesn't know it's there. Both other vehicles will tow my toolbox trailer or a tandem tipper all day quite happily. Both are tandem, 4wheel brakes. The toolbox trailer weighs 2.89T so has to have a breakaway system fitted and rego upgraded. The Tipper is legal 3T. Sorry about pinching this thread

As much as I would like a Prado I know I don't really need one so it is hard to justify the extra $$$ over a territory.

In saying that the Toyota dealer just called....when I hinted at changing my mind to get a territory he said he would talk to his 'manager' and get back to me with another offer....

If I ever get another vehicle, it will probably be a Diesel Territory. But I am way too much to a tightwad to buy a new one. Give it a couple of years, good secondhanders will be available.

I've seen 3 Territory owners at work brought new. All 3 had issues. Some major, some minor some different to the others. One issue I recall was brake lines were to short, was noticed when car was on hoist for another issue that the lines were holding the wheels up when lifted. As a Nissan owner I'd still say out of your choices to pick the Prado & in the diesel would be best.  "IMHO"

I'm a far more adventurous offroader than when I started out.  If you & The Boss like it, you'll probably become more adventurous.  A Prado now will do almost everything that you might want. Whereas the Territory will be more limiting.

Will a dollar or two saved now, be wasted on selling and upgrading because you want to be more adventurous down the track?

Prado. But as a Prado owner I am biased 170000 k with no issues or rattles to speak of.

The Prado will cost more but retain its value far far more than a territory.  Whether its fair or not the Territory will be virtually unsellable down the track or you will get peanuts for it.

Why not check out Pajero.  They are always having sales.  Last week they were throwing in a mail order bride to go with the fake chrome trim.  Cant get better than that!

If you need an All Wheel Drive have you checked out Kluger?  Resale will kill Territory.

If you need low range then its Paj or Prado.

If you need HD off road the its Patrol.

The worlds your oyster.

I have a Territory Ghia and a Prado  GXL 150 series

Had the Territory for a few years now, still have it. Its my daily driver.

Prado was my husbands bought at the end of 2010. When he changed jobs he got a company car so I started driving the Prado, its a manual and I really didnt like it. Living in suburbia and having traffic lights, round about or having to turn every 50mtrs meant that a manual was a PIA compared to auto so we sold it rather than having an expensive car sitting around.

Current plan, buy another 150 Prado and get rid of the Territory. Both the cars have different luxury items the other doesnt have (going to miss the seat auto adjusting to my setting) but I did prefer the Prado, probably because the terri keeps failing. Get something fixed and then something else goes, my friend who also has a terri but a newer model has the same issues. Also its just plain embarrassing when you are at the lights and there is one behind you, one next to you and another two waiting on the other side!

So my plan, get rid of my awful Territory (who I used to love but now hate) and get back into a Prado!

at the end of the day the Territory is nothing more than a Falcon Station Wagon.  One of my collegues got one as his company car instead of a Ranger.  After six months, one of which it spent in the repairers the company has now cut it's losses and will no longer buy Territorys. 

Personally I think the extra dollars of a Prado are easily justifiable in the resale alone.

I've got a Territory, not my favourite car in the world but it SWMBO loves it and it's great for around town duties, has heaps of room for the kids and all their crap, tows the Swan like it's not there and is very economical (deisel).  When I was recently looking for a new car for myself I looked at the Prado and loved it but the budget couldn't stretch that extra $20k, so I ended up with the Navara.

Mate to be honest from what you've said the Territory would be fine. M folks have towed a van around Aus with their petrol Terra. Sure they had a few probs, but they went round Aus (on bitch.) so anything would have had a few minors.

But then so would alot of other cars. Like the Mits. Challenger. Personally I would look at some of the others apposed to the Terra based on reviews and such.

You will wish you got the Prado the one day you need 4wd to get to that "special spot". Beats walking 2k's there.

I agree with Lost, it is like comparing a shower and a swimming pool, they both get you wet but designed for different things. 

I know lots of people with Prados, generally very happy with them and a reasonable capable 4wd.  I know lots of people with Territories also and generally not so happy.  The one I know best is my bosses car, cost just under $70K 5 years ago, has to go back to have the bolts on the turbo tightened every 5,000Km, has troubles with discs that need machining / replacing way more than any other car I know of, has always been well maintained and detailed regularly but when he was thinking of trading it in a few months ago the ford dealer thought they were being incredibly generous by offering him $15K

We have an FG Falcon and its a bloody ripper of a car.

The arguments above about getting your wife what she is happy with are very sensible. If you want the Prado/Pajero you need to get her to be keen on a real 4wd.

Our territory is only 3 years old, 45,000 km. it is comfortable and tows well on the road but we have had endless problems - an intermittent start/ stall issue since new that is still not fixed, electrical issues with window winders, front end tie rods worn out prematurely, rear window hinges have sagged.......

We are about to cut our losses and get a Prado, which we should have done at the start.

My parents have a territory that is about 5 years old its an ok car to drive. They have not had too many issues with it and i think they were all covered by ford. We have freinds with a territory that once the waaranty expired so did the car. They cant wait to get rid of it. We have had two Prados and had only two issues. The first one melted after being deliberatrly torched, by the person that stole it, and just recently we had a minor issue where a line on the vaumm side of the turbo fell off and the turbo stopped doing its thing. That is the only real issue we have had with our prado and its dragged our KK all over the country side without any issues or problems.
