Prado Vs Territory

Fellow swaggers,

I have a little dilema and I need some opinions. We are looking to upgrade our Subaru Diesel Forester for either a 2011 GX Prado (diesel) or a 2012 Territory (diesel).

Most people instantly scream Prado and I originally did as well however for the same price with the Territory the fit out is a lot nicer and they are a nicer drive (which the wife likes!).

We tow a 2011 Jayco Hawk OB however will only be taking this out a handful of times a year and in terms of towing capacity the 2 vehicles are on par with weight limits.

I keep bouncing between the two and it doesn't help that I live in central NSW which is Toyota Country!

One thing that does annoy me is that the Toyota Dealer won't budge however the Ford dealer is throwing things at me to make the sale (including 3yrs extra warranty, free tyres for life, heavy duty tow bar etc etc).

Help!!!

I have a Subaru Outback Diesel and have just bought a Pajero. Why ? Because I intend on going on the beach and more offroad, longer trips needing to cary more gear, as well as the bitumen trips.

Your decision gets down to what type of travelling you intend on doing. The Territory will not go everywhere the Prado will go. I think its really that simple between these two.

The Toyota dealer won't budge beacuse there is high demand for Prado's. There isn't the same for Territories...

It depends on weather you want to go off the tar ? Maybe the resale would be better on the prado

The Ford dealer is throwing a great package shows how desperate they are in trying to move sales well I suppose the news today says it all. At the end of the day you have to way up what is best for you.

Now on a serious note.
We have just gone through this and I even looked at (dare I say) a Hyundai.
But at the end of the day it was a Prado the won us over.
Still not as nice as the other Holden, Nissan, Ford and the rest that we looked at.
But hey you got to love the TOYOTA's
Oh what a feeling!!!!!!! lol

Mate, I've had both & let me tell you, I would not ever go back to a Territory. The Prado is a far superior vehicle.

Prado or Pajero.........both good units. Territory.................well you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter.

We have friends who had a territory and we ourselves have had 3 prados.

Friends were happy to take the terri up the beach if we were with them. Guess that says something- do you want to do softroading? If so, will you be the tower or towee?

As for resale, never had a prob with the 2 Prados i have sold, and also never heard someone say they lost out when they sold a Prado. Territories, well yeah i do know a couple of people that sold them and felt they lost cash. As for my last prado sale, i didn't even get to wash it and someone from work insisted on taking it off my hands before i advertised it.

If you want to keep it for a while then just think about the sort of driving you want to do. Make a choice based on that.

If you might want to sell it sooner rather than later then i think there's only 1 choice - Prado. Doesnt seem to matter if sold in the first few years or 8 years old like my last one. They hold their value well.

Our Prado is older but at 14 yrs old everything still feels nice and believe me they can take the occaisional abuse and not even feel it

We have a 150 GXL prado and love it, our next option would have been the pajero and  then the  challenger.

Thanks guys...

At 35 I am only entering the world of 4wding and although I have not done a great deal up to this point I would like the option to be able to do it.

Just want something to tow the camper with ease as well as have enough room inside to carry all our gear as well as 2 girls under 3 and a 40 kilo dog...oh and the wife ;D

something that might swing it and did for us
the Prado/Pajero cargo area is as tall as it's wide.
We plan on raising the floor making some custom built shelving and drawers under and along one side  so that the dogs can hang out in the back and we still have separate space for luggage, esky etc

If you'd like the option to go 4wding I see there being only one choice (out of you two) and yes the Prado's do hold their value well.

Oldn, a word of advice: the original question asked for first hand experience/comparison of 2 particular makes. There are plenty of threads that have asked generic questions like this, and 9 times out of 10 they just end up with everyone saying 'get the vehicle that I drive', and then from there mud slinging starts and it all goes pear shaped (I'm not sitting in a glass house> been involved myself, and warned by moderator).
Best not to weigh in if you don't have any first hand knowledge of the 2 cars in question, unless of course you do wish to witness what transpires (for ref check out a recently locked thread about lc200 lemons and you will get the drift)

Well, to go against the grain here - if I were starting out with camper trailering and new to offroad - I'd go Territory. If that's the one your wife likes, it's going to help get her out there with the Jayco, right? And if it's also the daily driver, the Ford beats the pants off the Toyota (and almost all the other contenders in the large 'SUV' category) as it is so nice to drive and is extremely well designed and fitted out.

It will also go pretty well offroad (it has big wheels and long travel suspension) although the moment you lift a wheel it will stop - but you won't be taking it places where that will happen.

Once you establish your camping patterns, and this may take a good year or two, you'll know soon enough whether you actually need a serious 4WD like a Prado. And Prado is a great vehicle and should you choose that option you won't be disappointed.

We've had a 2005 Territory since 2007 - RWD TX 5 seater with a few TS options - and it has been a superlative family and travelling vehicle. There are some issues with our model but all have been rectified either through dealer bulletins during servicing, or through recalls. The new ones are sorted, and that diesel is a sweet motor indeed. If you want to research them, go to www.fordforums.com.au and go to the Territory section, lots of very knowlegable people there. So far all I've heard there about the new diesel model is positive.

I'd happily trade mine on a new diesel one if it were our primary vehicle; we use our Patrol as the daily driver though. Our Territory will go soon so I can get a GQ Patrol for playing in the tracks :) Mrs Squalo will be pleased when I'm no longer bringing the GU home with newly acquired character...

Resale on the diesel Territorys is going to be better than the earlier models (which like a drink, but that's about the only bad thing I can say about them).

I've had 2 Prados and can't speak highly enough of them. Excellent off roader, great resale as others have said. My old 95 series went everywhere and never ever let me down. I advertised it Friday avo and sold it Saturday morning. Just getting my new 150 set up and it will start hitting the tracks over the xmas-new years holidays.

I've never driven the Territory so cannot comment..

I'm lucky enough to have an 80 Series and a AWD Territory. Has the six speed auto great for towing
If were going to a CP or not to far of road we take the Terri for comfort fuel economy.
We have had it up some nasty tracks and driveways were we live and with the traction control it was fine.

Having said that, there is a vehicle that reviewers have said has equalled or bettered Prados/Pajeros off road and drives better than a Territory on bitumen.   But I won't follow the 9 out of 10 and mention its name.

I work in the automotive industry and would have a Territory if some one gave me one in a matter of fact i would i own a Land Rover before a Territory.
