Long shaft or Short shaft outboard?

Has anyone got any thoughts on mounting a long shaft 15hp outboard motor on the drawbar of a Jayco Swan Outback with extended drawbar. I unsure to go for long or short shaft. Has anyone got ideas or suggestions to help me make my mind up they both weight around 34kgs?

I thought it all depended on the depth you needed to get down when mounted to your boat. Why get a longer one if not needed?

How high is the transom?

That is the measurement used to get the leg length of the outboard so the cav plate is at the water level at planing speed.

Give or take a hole or two.

It all depends on the boat you get as either short or long transam. A short shaft engine from memory is 15-18 inches and long is 19-24 I think.

I am looking at a LS dingy Stacer 379 Proline for 2150 and I can get a good Mercury 15hp Second hand with 3 months warranty LS and a new Dunbier fold up trailer for 1100 as well, all up 4350 registered. Just not sure to go for a short or long setup?

A Stacer 379 proline takes a short shaft outboard, with a maximun 25hp outboard.

I have a long shaft 25hp, I went to that way as I found the long shaft tiller made it easier for me fishing as it was higher in my sitting position. But it is harder to stow the longer motor, but I am happy with what I have.

Yes you can get either but the height of your transom will dictate what you need as others have said. Transom of around 15 inches are short shaft, and around 20 inches will require long shaft.

My boat was a short shaft transom, but I rebuilt it to take the long leg motor and it has worked well with the long leg.
