Yep, that's the plan. We've only got the 1 camper.......... ;D

It's no longer or wider than most other flip-overs, but it is taller.

Hi hubby and I have just joined myswag and are doing the trip to cape this year, but on our own, we would love to go with a group.  Are you full or can we join in?  We have a Nissan Patrol all fitted out  and cub off road  camper both ready for the trip.  We have only had the camper for 6 months and have done a couple of long weekends and love it can't wait to get out more.

Leon and Naideen,

I'm going up there also, but I'm not on the list as we are not guaranteed to be there at the appointed time, we are going from the far South/West tip of Australia through the desert to the tip of Cape York Peninsular (following the red line on my icon map)
We would be attempting to make our plans coinside with the 30 member group, but we can't guarantee to be at the starting point at the correct time due to the complexity of traveling so far to get there, so we are not expecting to be counted as part of the group.
Is only 3 vehicles (so far) in our group from West Australia  ;D

You must know some people to be able to travel up the west coast of the cape like that - most of it is Aboriginal land on that side.
Do not PM me for technical advice - start a thread.

and when you look at the red line on my map it does not show going anywhere near Cairns either, but I am going there  ;D

The towns of Karumba and Weipa are both over on the west coast of the Cape and are worth a look at

( hope this is not going to turn into a 12v thing now, after all it's not a road map )

Mainey I don't know if this helps, but it is all I know.

I know the road from Normanton to Kowanyama, normally a reasonably good road. I know the locals go from Kowanyama to Pormpuraaw, but it is a seasonal road, I have never done this road so it is only on hear say.

I don't know of a direct road to Aurukun from Pormpuraaw, although I have traveled from Yarraden, which is south of Coen, to Aurukun, they used to have a barge to go from the south side of the Archer River over to Aurukun, but this was some years ago, and the conditions might of changed.

I don't think there is a road to Weipa from Aurukun, other than going back to the main road and heading north.

This map I think shows the roads I am thinking about.

Thank you,

Yes, however after traveling from the other side of the continent we want to see some more of the local area up there than just the track up to the Cape.

It's a long desolate drive for us even before we get there, so making it worthwhile is paramount  ;D

I hate to say it but we are out for the trip.
Just started a new job in the mines and I can't book holidays until I have 12 months up.
To all that are going.....ENJOY.

We travelled from Pormpuraaw to Kowanyama back in July last year, fantastic drive but very slow due to really rough sections(75% of the track). But be warned, crossing the Mitchell River is not for the faint hearted. No markers, DEEP water, wide crossing and  salt water crocs. But if you wait for the locals to drive across, you can follow them and it would be easy as.
