We missed the gates-closed time from a game reserve in SA due to this exact issue.  A cranky elephant blocking the track out, we were less than 500m from the exit.  Instead of playing err elephant (aka chicken) I reversed back about 2km and then drove another 20km and exited via another part of the park.  They tried to charge us a $150 late departure fee, but I refused as it was the elephants fault, I told them to bill the elephant!

And here I thought Bill must have been following me into work today. I swear - someone must have painted a big "cut me off then drive at 40" sign on the bonnet of the Pathfinder this week. 

Somehow I don't feel so bad any more though!
