Used to go out to western QLD when I was a lot younger to do a bit of hunting.  The property owners father was retired and used to come with us from time to time. He was and old bushy in his 80's, he had been a shearer, drover, pro roo shooter and a heaps of other jobs, he was also the best shot I have ever seen.  Any way we learnt a lot of bushcraft from him including how to wipe with a stick.

His advice was to chose your stick carefully without knots, rough grain or bark and to always wipe with the grain of the timber.
