FOXWING AWNING

Hi Guys

Foxwing awning ??...who has one?, could you give me some hardcore feedback, I'm in the market and I'm the procrastinator from hell...lol

some pic's would be nice .....is anyone using them in conjunction with their oztent??

There is one on ebay at the moment that is about 11 months old and sounds a bit shabby if you ask me.  Not sure if this is indicative of the quality of the product or the way it's been used and cared for.

We have a canvas awning (like the ARB ones etc, but made of heavy canvas) and while its heavier and not as quick to setup, and doesn't give as much shade, I've never had to peg it down in moderate wind and everything is contained in it - no extra poles etc required.

yhea saw that Andy,, thanks....no real point bidding on something at that price if there going for 800 new on ebay...might call me crazy, but that's the procrastinator in me ..lol...............just spent 24hr trying to convice my brother y i would buy and extra 20cm in and oztent for $100..lol

Thanks mate, yhea the diy option is a doer but im procratinating over an option for my camper idea... im really interested in the intergration of this system to be able to build to it as we grow... how do you find the oztent ?(be harsh now !!)

I got a 3m one from Rhino Rack and cut it in half, its the perfect length then, just needed a couple of extra ends and I had pole storage for the 2 vehicles the Foxwing gets swapped between.

The Foxwing was deigned by Rhino Rack and OzTent

As others have said the Foxwing is actually made by Oztent and distributed through Rino. It is made from the same material as the Oztent tents and uses the same construction methods. Some / most Oztent models can zip directly on to any of the 4 sides of the Foxwind and you can also buy additional zip on awnings to create more shade coverage or make a wall.

We have one and although they may take a little longer than some to put up you end up with more shade during more of the day. Plus if you do get some rain they also come with an inbuilt rain collection point. I would say it takes 5 to 10 minutes to setup / take down.

As for people who say ah but I don't have to tie mine down ....... any awning is just a big sail and thus any wind is going to rip it off the side of your car eventually if it is not secured down. Also I would suggest having a look at the setup videos on the Rino website.

The only down side to them over other light weight roof mounted awnings is the price and extra weight. Having said that though they still have more advantages than disadvantages well for me anyway. Additionally have you ever tried to sit under say an ARB 2m side mount awning .... Your lucky to fit 2 chairs under there let alone anything else !!!! Plus if you have a fridge in the back of your car you have instant shade / rain cover from your chair to the beer fridge.

how do you find the oztent ?(be harsh now !!)

If I have to be harsh, its size in the bag is rather large, but that is what makes it a 30 second tent.

No problems with quality, performance, usability etc.

Who, like me 

The only time I've had to tie down my gunyah awning is when I'm using the extension bit, because it has no poles to self support.  Otherwise the poles all lock together and it would have to be a really strong wind.  The arms come out from the vehicle and lock into the leading edge, where the poles are.  So long as you pull it out taut it doesn't get much flap or wind up. 

Have a look in the pic below, you can see the wind flapping the extension (which is just some canvas stuck into the channel on the awning, and then two poles stuck in corners-  forgot my proper ropes that day so had to dodgy it up).  By comparison the actual awning is fine.



Here's one by itself.  The cheap gazebo you can see in teh corner kept on blowing away that day, but the awning didn't need roping down.



Don't get me wrong, I like the Foxwing but its not as "no ropes" as other heavy canvas awnings - that and the need to carry poles separately are its only drawbacks to me (yes, minor things, but I would forget the poles and ropes I'm sure)   You are right about the room, the foxwing offers heaps more and offers rear shade.

I have been looking at them for my next car (which has a side opening tailgate, rather than vertical like my Jeep) and would like the coverage over the boot it affords.  I'm still debating whether to go for it or put a canvas awning over the back.

I should add that to get the same amount of room as a Foxwing I'd need to use the extension (whcih makes it 5m x 2m), which does need extra poles and ropes, so once you do that they're pretty much the same.
