Log Splitter / splitter-axe

hey all

BRAINS TRUST assistance needed.

one of our wonderful puppies destroyed half our leather lounge. (before we could donate it to someone)

We've now skinned it to salvage the leather to use for the upholstery on the forever being rebuilt Getaway van...

I just need to break the lounge frame down to go into a skip bin that coming next week for other reasons.

I can't touch any of the power tools in the garage for the other reasons (an insurance claim for an errant roof cleaner blasting up under the tiles and dumping 40 years of mud onto the contents of the garage)

I thought to myself... I've always wanted an axe... or maybe a log splitter for camping.

I'll be honest... my cheap ass tendencies are leaning towards the Saxon 2kg Splitter Axe https://www.bunnings.com.au/saxon-2kg-splitter-axe_p0339683 as it's cheap and will do both jobs. Probably doing neither overly well... but would it be fine for some basic usage?

(once I cut all the webbing out, it's just the frame to destroy...)

Just to be clear.. you skinned the lounge, not the puppy?

well of course... skinning the lounge gave us a heap of nice brown leather...

the puppy would be a lot of white floof.

hmmmmm... maybe we can save the floof to stuff the cushions with...

ended up with the cheapo' axe/splitter from the Big Green Shed + a 750mm crowbar.

Should be enough to get the job done.

2kg seems to be a bit light to me if you actually want to split logs with it. I have recently bought an 8lb splitting maul to replace the 6lb one that I've had for about 15 years.



I have a Fiskars X11 hand splitting axe for kindling, but Fiskars are pricey and they get more pricey the bigger they are.

$120 for a good axe is a one off good investment I think.
Had my Fiskar for maybe 10 yrs......and have had plenty of miss hits....no damage to the handle at all.

We used to go through a splitter every season splitting about 15m3 of firewood, until we bought a Fiskars, still got the same one 10 years later, although it's used for camping only these days due to moving away from the cold.

I have the Fiskars X27 XXL which is the best thing I have bought to split wood. I did buy a wooden handle block buster from the Green Shed but busted the handle first hit, returned it and promptly broke that so got my money back.

Looked at the Fiskars after seeing the recommendations on here and haven't looked back.
