It rained for 40 days and 40 nights for Noah , Mosses wandered around in the desert for 40 years and Jesus wandered around in the desert for 40 days, forty days was the period from the resurrection of Jesus to the ascension of Jesus. It pops up in the Good Book 159 times, across both the Old and New Testaments.

Brings back memories of my old transport days when regulations were not enforced quite as strictly as they are now.

I've taken it to be "a long time" although some of the periods are in memory. Eg Jesus walked the desert for 40 days to equal Moses 40 years.

Maybe it's just really bad translations and forty meant something completely different.
