Here is the scenario.
You plan on doing a big job on your vehicle on a certain date.
Now here is the question.
How long before said day do you get the parts?
Myself, I usually get them as soon as possible after making the decision on which date I will do the work, just in case they need to be ordered.
I like knowing I have all the parts and tools to do the job well in advance.
I'm trying to figure out how OCD I'am...

With how unreliable many businesses are these days, i'd get the parts ASAP and not be disappointed when the gear doesn't get there like the place promised and guaranteed it would be by a certain time, and hence leaves you unable to do the job.

It depends on what I'm doing...

Simple service - I've normally got most of that at home already, the only thing I need to get each time is the filter. I tend to stock up on the Repco 30-40% NRMA members days and whenever else I can find things on special.

Bigger tasks/fixing broken things - I'll start off by working my way through what has been playing up, and then trying to work out what is needed to sort it.

Luckily I've got a good relationship with a number of parts places in town (including the Toyota main dealer) who know what I have as vehicles... but being known by first name due to all the things you've ordered over the last 4 years and having some of the guys as friends on Facebook?

I've actually got some parts on order at the moment with one shop, and they've said that they'll be in a few days later than they originally quoted so I didn't have to pay the $20 freight charge they were going to get stung with. I don't mind that - the part was only $13, so an extra $20 doesn't make sense.

Had 80k service on my patrol about 3 months ago. They told me my brakes had about 10k left. Ordered front and rear pads that day and they're sitting on a shelf in the garage right now. Maybe I'm OCD too?

Hahahahaha
I did the same when I realised I was going to need pads and shoes.
Ended up throwing them on the back seat for the new owner to install because I sold the Navara before it needed them...

^^^ I'm definately not OCD  .. The mate that did a road worthy tells me "  Gunna have to do the brake pads in the next few months as there down a bit "  about half worn and with the way you drive this thing they'll need doing    ... Was my daily / Racer driver ..
Next rego the same thing .. And the next .. fast forwards 5 years, took the car off the road for an engine conversion / full rebuild and the pads still had a 1/4 of a full pads worth of  material left on them  .. The pads were in the car when I bought it  .. ;D ;D
