The Amity Point camp grounds were transferred many years ago and the changes whilst minimal have been positive.

I though that had happened already a while back as they were already so heavily involved in it's running, but apparently not the case I see now.
What happens next?...well no dogs allowed on Flinders Beach for a start, starts next year I have heard

I think transferred to indigenous people is a more descriptive title, but returned to indigenous owners I think is incorrect, as just as we "white" people never owned it, neither did the indigenous people.

Rant over......just like other "transferred" places, costs and ease of access will no doubt change..

Hi Cruiser, From what I have seen its and where I have camped on Indigenous lands, As long as they do not follow NPs rules its only a positive move more relaxed better run and not so many rules, Craig

If it's handed back to the locals and if they only allow the locals to stay there, it'll end up looking like the local tip. Just like every other place handed back to the locals all over the top end.

I think the part that people have missed is that "...it has been able to buy out the IBA's $7 million investment."

They've obviously found a formula that works, and have been working hard to get it to work allowing them to buy out a partner to take complete control of it.

It's also interesting that they've got the premium market working for them with $350/night accomodation options - that's going to go a long way to keeping the riff raff out...

they have run the show for ages already like I thought they did, it appears this new situation is just finalising the money side of things in that business set up...they need the tourists to make money for that business set up, and they live in the townships / many hundreds of houses that are on the island already and have no need to camp. Straddie isn't a desolate remote island, it's a 40 minute ferry ride from suburban Brisbane, has all the mod cons other then Maccas and KFC etc (thank god for that). Currently the main mess being made here, is the non "locals" / campers putting rubbish beside already over flowing industrial bins....hopefully they'll get emptied real soon.

there's plenty of normal beach camping on Straddie also that they look after, so it gets it's fair share of wankers there also....we had a few words with several the other night actually.
