Rebel Wilson awarded $4.5m Australian. Come on now.  Where do they dig these judges up from? Another sentence that doesn't fit the crime. She won't need to work for a while now. But better watch what we say here. She is hot on the sue wagon at present.

Not as bad as the big CEO's of some companies that get a lot more than that (ten fold) and run the business into the ground.

On the topic, good for her, she took the tabloid company on and won. Loss of acting income over the years is taken into account I guess.

Pretty fair I reckon, the mag killed her work in Kungfu panda, being sacked midway or thereabouts and besides, she's giving the 4.5 away anyway.

A lot of people accuse the media of making stuff up.

Sometimes they do and they do it with good knowledge of the law and the knowledge that
very few people have the guts or the money to take on the big media companies.

I know of one person who was told by his lawyer he had a good case to sue but asked  if he would risk his house. His career was short circuited but he basically swallowed his pride and got on with life.

Ms Wilson said enough is enough. The stories were lies.

If it makes some in the media have a think about what they publish it is a good thing.

Think you jumped the gun there, as mentioned above she is giving all that money away!
Good on her I say, these grubs that make up Shit to sell in their gossip mags . They'll be careful what the publish now.

I can understand the cynicism with regards to the payout.
I know nothing of the judicial system, however I imagine all judges started out as lawyers & would have intimate knowledge of the fee structures for the firms, so if a firms fees are based on a % of payout, then I don't begrudge someone a touch of cynicism.
But do I really care............. No

Someone once said "don't let the facts get in the way of a good story".
Can't say much about the """facts""" and I wouldn't say it was a """good story""", and I didn't know I was on a rant.
I just started the post, leave everyone else to rant.

She does have more in common with Clive Palmer than just the body shape. Rebel gives money to charity as does Clive. It's just that Clive's charity is himself and immediate family.

You'll find.....

Quote from: ABC NEWSDamages payments for non-economic losses in Victorian defamation cases, such as for emotional suffering, are capped at $389,500. But "special damages", including loss of earnings, are uncapped.

The damages awarded included $650,000 in general damages and $3,917,472 in special damages for opportunities lost. Bauer will also have to pay the court costs.

The trouble with humans is that we all at times have very short memories , 2010 Christmas - Clive Palmer plays Santa Claus with $10m Christmas bonus for Queensland Nickel staff.

And yet how many of those lucky staff are now living in their gift cars with nothing but memories of the good times while Clive (allegedly) transferred millions of dollars to himself via family?

I seem to remember, Rebel was prepared to settle out of court for $200,000.

Bauer, said no..... take it to court.

So she did..... I don't even like Rebel, at all, but good on her for the win. (Just for the record too, i don't think she likes me either)

It's estimated she'll be paid between $5-6mil for Pitch Perfect 3. She claimed to have been ditched from Kung Fu Panda 3 for the damage to her reputation. No idea how much Kate Hudson got paid for the role in her place, but movies prior to that (e.g Bride Wars) Hudson made US$7mil... so... Maybe $4.5mil for damages does kind of reflect potential loss of earnings/etc. Just a thought.

Regardless, I think its refreshing to actually see a celebrity take on the tabloids for a change, instead of letting them get away with publishing any unsubstantiated trash they feel like.
