Hi All,

Firstly, apologies in advance as I wasn't sure which part of the forum to post this on.  Looking for some suggestions around trip destination for our Christmas break.

To assist, some basis facts - we are travelling with a dual cab ute and FF camper trailer.  My wife and I only as kids aren't coming, no pets.  Proposed departure date 23 December and need to be back at work on Monday 8 Jan so we have basically 2 weeks available.  Leaving from NE Vic.

Given time of year, the initial plan was to head to Tassie to beat the heat, however having just worked through the booking options ave discovered that anticipated cost to get us down there and back is $1,894.00!!!! That's a lot of dough that can go towards fuel etc, so we are now thinking of alternate options.

We are not too fussed where we go but I just don't want to end up somewhere where it is just so unpleasant due to the heat.  A couple of options we have (briefly) considered include SA, maybe Coffin Bay area (and Flinders ranges is on the Bucket list but probably too hot), as well as head North either to North Coast NSW (say Ballina / Byron area) or further North to Sunshine Coast and/or Bundy area.

Have not spent any time in any of the areas above so know nothing about them really.  Given we only have 2 weeks we don't want to spend the whole time driving either.  Bear in mind 2 days into the trip is Christmas day so it would be nice to not have to travel that day if possible, however open to suggestions.

Probably asking a lot, but does anyone have any suggestions to help us narrow down some options.  We thought we had it sorted but the cost to get to Tassie is pretty much the amount we have budgeted for the entire trip!!

Thanks in advance

ivan

Have a look at NSW south coast that time of year is warm water. plenty of bush and beach. There are a few really nice free/cheap camps on the coast.

It'll be Xmas School holidays and most of the East Coast will be manic and at premium rates. One option you might consider that pretty much empties out at that time of year.

If travelling from NE Vic, you can do a great loop up via Corryong & the Snowy's, couple of days in the ACT seeing the federal sights, then back via Tumut.

If you're happy to go as far as Bundy, how about Fraser Island?
Will be warm but plenty of swimming options and shade. Get on the ferry at Inskip Point (not as far as Bundy).

We did the Snowys at Christmas last year and had an absolute ball.  That and the last Myswag National Meet are two of our camping highlights.  There are tons of free camps and apart from the ones at Thredbo were all acceptably quiet for that time of year.

We did Sydney - Tumut - Blowering Res (good Free camp on the reservoir) - Yarrangonbilly (free camp & great caves) - Cabramurra - Khancoban - Thredbo - Canberra.

Being high it isn't too hot, but there is swimming, hiking and some awesome mountain biking :-)

Is Mitchell's crossing also known as Majors Creek Reserve?

Thanks for the responses all.

I have a couple of brothers in Canberra so could be a good opportunity to catch up with the nephews and nieces.

Seems like a better option than doing a million miles then spinning for home straight away!!!

Cheers

Blue Mountains?

Barrington Tops NP? We haven't been there yet but its definitely on the list.

Yamba?

Myall Lakes NP? My brother highly rates this area but we haven't made it there yet either.

Enjoy it! :D
