where in Australia is the best place to go deep sea fishing ? Ie..for someone special, to sit at the back of the charter, in the seat, and hook one of the big ones ?

I thought someone on here might have a view

I'm sure you'll get some helpful responses Mark... ;D

You could look at Bermagui. Not far north of Mallacoota.

First off.....you need to narrow down your target species  within the term .. " big ones "..... weather your chasing game fish or surface dwellers or bottom fish....then you can start your search...... tell us which species your targeting .....then maybe somone can start giving some advice or starting point......

                                            Cheers Tracker.

If you mean Marlin then Cairns is the go, also Port Stephens and Exmouth. What time of year are you talking?...because they have a season when they are there. You can catch an average of 300 - 400lb Blue Marlin off the Goldy and mates have landed a 900lb'er there a few years ago, but the season this year has been pretty poor.

Well...If's that is the case....I'd run with Rummy's suggestion and start around the Cairns area....  be prepared to get the spiders out of your wallet and make sure wifey starts pumping iron about 12 months before you book a trip...... Happy hunting and tight lines.

Chasing billies is easiest and cheapest in vanuatu. Including airfares and accomodation it is still cheaper than cairns. They have the spread out literally inside the harbour. Fiji is also good but operators arent so common. Cairns is a lot of fuel to get anywhere. Cooktown is closest to the ribbons and big blacks but not where a greenie should be chartering. WA has sails galore but that is stand up and mental fast. Vanuatu will charter you a proper chair on a proper game boat with even odds of hooking a big beast. Last time I was there we scored a 250+ kg blue out of season on 25 kg stand up gear. First and last time we saw it was when it hit the spread but what a rush to see the big girl.

Bay of islands is a great location for marlin and tuna and its having the best season in decades.
Winter or summer the kingfish are monsters and abundant.
Snapper fishing theres awsum to.
Exchange rates are great and you can get on a boat without having to harvest an organ

Deep sea charters run out of Rainbow Beach..... no marlin fishing, but some big bludgers get on the hook here.

plenty of smaller black Marlin get caught up around Fraser and the Sunny Coast, this year they had a cracka season that went for ages there. There was a short good run of blacks off the Goldy for a few weeks, but nothing like the had up around the Sunny Coast.

Mark, another option for you to consider would be the purchase of your very own game fisher & having it crewed by some experienced Myswagger nautical types, of which I just happen to be, not to mention a very experienced skipper (now an Isuzu skipper) who goes by the name of "Bruce" and of course, the aforementioned Rumpig.
There is a very nice, proven fish magnet on the market at the moment named "Assegai" which would fit the bill. Pardon the pun.
You can't say that this wouldn't work, hey?

If they're novice fisho, dont take them chasing billies, alot of trolling and time sitting around doing nothing.
On the east coast any good charter between Hervey Bay and Cairns will do the job nicely.
On the West coast, Dirk Hartog Island is the place to be. It pays to hit the gym a few months before you head out. Some of the deep dweller will put additional lenght to your arms.

Hi Mark, If you want to chase reef fish and or sports fish like Dollyies try Smithy out of Mooloolaba Rob is a top bloke, If you what a chance to catch a good red emperor or pearl perch or snapper try Baitrunner Mat Cooper a good bloke and or Keely Rose owned by Ed Falconer both the last boats are out of Rainbow Beach, Craig

If you decide you want to chase Marlin on the Goldy, Ross McCubbin on Lucky Strike would be my first call and also the boys on Mufasa Sport Fishing also seem to find their fair share of both black and blue Marlin. Another boat to look at would be Sparra's boat Hotshot, he does the season up in Cairns aswell as the Good Coast season also, but the two boats I mentioned earlier generally seem to find a few more marlin then my last recommendation. Probably for a first timer, chasing the smaller blacks would be a good starting point option for your wife, the bigger blues are a serious work out, even when you are running heavy gear and sitting in the chair. Generally speaking the smaller blacks will put on a better show jumping out of the water more often and are more lively when you get them to the boat (as it doesn't as long), many a time the bigger fish jump at the start and then dive deep, and you as the person on the end of the rod can miss that action whilst you are jumping in the chair and hooking the rod up. What ever you decide on it's great fun when you hook onto something, but it can be very boring trolling for hours and hours on end without a hit of the lines.
