Surprised the Beetle lasted this long in its current format, dont see any around anywhere

QuoteVolkswagen is halting production of the last version of its Beetle model this week at its plant in Puebla, Mexico.

It's the end of the road for a vehicle that has symbolised many things over a history spanning the eight decades since 1938.

Its actually Leo Geoghegan' s old road car from back when it was new.

At one point, I believe Leo bought it back and for sometime, it was considered lost.

Tom's had it a couple of years now. (He's got all the history of it)

He started with six Harley Davidsons when he was just 16 years old

CLASSIC motorcycle buffs dream of what they call 'barn finds' – original old bikes, covered in dust and cobwebs, pushed to the back of a shed and left there for decades. There's a collector in Western Australia who's been accumulating old bikes and pushing them to the back of his shed for almost 50 years. They call him Toad, his collection now tops 400 bikes, and we were invited into his amazing treasure trove to compile this report.

Toad is still collecting and very rarely sells anything — so it's a fair bet that the collection will continue to grow.

But then what?

"When I go," Toad says "the whole lot will be auctioned."

"Rosie and I don't have any kids, so the money will go to something useful. Probably the Royal Flying Doctor Service."

But until then, that nice little two-stroke MV will continue to wear its rusty tank; it's originality protected by the contrary West Australian collector who believes a layer or two of dust has as much value as a coat of Autosol.

while up the mountains on weekend, i couldnt help but think what would be hidden in some of the barns we cruise by every year...
thinking of all the cars/bikes sold over 50 years, and how many models of some brands you never see at all even at shows.. wonder if there is one or 2 in that shed over there....

but I did see several A9X/SLR5000's on eastlink this morning... *drool*...

Oh and 5+ brand new Ferrari's on way home through Bonnie Doon yesterday

Just think, 400 motorcycles gathering dust and deteriorating further and further, every single day.
Just think, 400 motorcyclists, restoring and enjoying the bikes more and more, every single day.

Yep, I'm not a restorer but I can't see the need to horde valuable stuff just to let it collect dust and rust away. Have to agree, sell it to someone so they can restore and get some enjoyment from it.
What a monumental waste.

I dont really see the point in it - not even for a pissing comp... but better than them being in landfill - to a point... if nobody will get their hands on them before they are too far gone, then yea may as well have been in landfill

That's the trouble Bruce, due to the costs to restore, difficulty in obtaining parts etc, many of them will become donor bikes for better ones to be restored.

Its funny now with classic cars too.... lots of stuff, mostly Pommy crap, is now becoming cool.

I'm hoping like hell, the Austin will be a good example.

Not my cup of tea as such, but I couldn't leave there to rot and the owner, knew he would never finish it.
The amount of engineering in the Austin is fantastic.
Just the ability, for it to be a very drivable classic.

My uncle ebayed my grandfathers Royal Enfield I think it was that my grandfather bought new in 1929 - auctioned a few years ago.. needed full restore... I didnt care would have been awesome to have had in family since 1929
I said what ever you want for it, I'll pay, just crate and send it... he wouldnt.. sold on ebay for 2000ukp... then 12mths later he happily sent me photos of the thing restored and being ridden complete with the original sidecar also restored...  Could have pissed on him.

I wouldnt have known where to start lookin for parts, would have been a full pay job.. but these bikes in the article would have been someones dream for parts as you said. but one day they still maybe.

Jeepers Creepers

My old nitrous oxide assisted (250hp shot), V8 Datsun 1200 spotted running around Brisbane yesterday.
I built it in 1990 and sold it in 94..... wish I still had this one.

It has a 347 cube stroker these days, not sure if still on the giggly stuff.
