Anti virus

Hi all, 
Our desk top and Jahna's laptop's anti virus has expired. I know there are a few handy computer guys on here and we know less than stuff all about these things, so what's the best anti virus out there? It was nortons that has expired.

I don't bother with antivirus software at home anymore, I find Windows Defender that is built into Windows 10 is pretty good.

At work I support a lot of McAfee Enterprise installations, and it's top notch.  Their consumer products, however are crap.

as others have said, haven't used separate antivirus for a while now...

just use the inbuilt one in windows 7/10 and then manually run a weekly scan of these two (the free version of each):

IMO, too much bloat in antivirus products these days, and if you are reasonably careful, it's not necessary...

This is the reason I've switched my home machines to Bitdefender. Similar quality, less nagging.

Same here, Eset is excellent software and doesn't hog your system like Norton etc. We use it on all three computers, two laptops and a desktop.

A good removal tool to find and delete all the bits that Norton and a few others leave everywhere is Revo Uninstaller free version.
Finds and removes the bits that a normal uninstall doesn't remove. Use with caution though.

+1 because I figure if the makers of your computer's software can't protect you then who can? Having said that like any antivirus they're never absolutely villain proof and you may still cop one and need to run their Malicious Software Removal tool-

Bitdefender Total Security, search the net for coupon codes and you'll get it down under $30 for a 3PC licence.

Install the trial version and when it's got 10 days to go you'll get an email with a "special price" but you need to wait until it's down to the last day, the emails will offer you cheaper and cheaper to by the full version the closer it gets to expiry.
Then with the coupon codes you will get it down even further.
The best i've done a year or two back was $21.90 USD for the 3PC licence.

By the way I just had the monster Win10 update and their Edge Browser is kicking butt in functionality and protection-

Took a long time with a number of restarts to update and when it was finished with my oldest 64bit Dell Inspiron PC I had no mouse or keyboard input. WTF!!! Managed to get the mouse going by shifting from rear USB port to the front but no go with the keyboard anywhere and how the Hell do you login until I managed to get up the screen keyboard and use the mouse to select keys and once in I could get at the Device Manager. As I found the USB controller software needed updating for the USB ports (one showed a triangled exclamation mark) and all good again so just be aware of such niceties with Win10 upgrades. This hardware/software treadmill will be the death of us all as I note the Stock Exchange computers going down on all the eggsperts.

Yeah yeah Bird I've heard all the anti Microsoft blurb before by the Ford owners who like to stick lots of Holden parts on them, etc, etc and I did use Kaspersky and Bitdefender before Microsoft got in on the act seriously. Yes I know, they along with Apple and Google know I'm going to have a piss before I know it but that's the point. They've got the world of Big Biz and commercials plus all our domestic crap at their fingertips to know exactly when and where the next threat emerges and the resources to snap to it and belt out a fix, an update or more antivirus definitions. Do you really think the the plethora of antivirus mobs on their income can muster those resources nowadays? I don't but in any case I don't see the bang for buck in paying the extra.
