So the misses wanted to get away. I wanted to go to Cuba before it becomes another state of the US. She wanted to do Brazil. She won.

My idea of fun is to re-create the top gear Bolivia special. Buy hire a 4wd and get out of Rio and head west.

She's not as keen.

Other than not taking local/any drugs etc does anyone have any suggestions. Or has anyone been there?

We leave in two weeks and are there for a month.

Went there a few years ago. Time in Rio to do the iconic things-Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and the statue.
Highlight was a 4 day cruise on the Amazon out of manaus, and catching piranha.

Well I'm here in Rio.
Even managed to even find a camping store to look at.

Don't think I want to camp in Brazil anymore if handguns are stranded camping equipment.

Thanks ajc. Plan to do see the falls from both the Brazilian side and the Argentinian side. Can't wait.  Eating whatever the locals are willing to cook me. I choose not to ask many questions.

Funny you should say that oldmate. The lady running the tour said these people were poor but happy.
I didn't think they were very poor at all.  Yes the houses were built with little respect to normal town planning practices but they are apparently quite overengineered and the owners look happy and proud.  The favelas are very clean and well maintained.  In fact during the world cup many made a lot of money renting them out on airbnb.
The area has only one road (which bizarrely enough was used for a Brazilian GP won by Fangio long before many of these houses were built). So all concrete etc had to be carried in there. The whole area is a network of narrow lanes and stairways as can be seen in the photos.
These favelas are quite sophisticated areas and most have been 'pacified' by local police. Meaning they are no longer controlled by local drug cartels.

Will do.

Loved this photo. Someone had bought a new fridge.  There were about 10 blokes with ropes trying to manhandle it to the fourth floor.  Whilst trying not to take out the 500 random cables above and below

43 days to the Olympics. Not sure the new tram line will be ready on time.
