Grays online crazy bidding "Items Stolen??"

Some of the items went massively above retail? it was crazy!

Auction fever!

I had a look a few days ago and thought I might pick up a bargain or two.

Had a look last night and thought it was already heading to high, so gave it a miss altogether.

Hmmmm!!!   I ended up paying $190 total for a brake controller.   Could've bought it probably for the same price at a sale down here.   Swagmail anyone?

I think allot of people forgot about that one.

I used to go to the car auctions in Sydney. People are crazy. Prices would range from bargain to ridiculously above market value.

I have never understood the psychology of auctions...at the end you walk away knowing that you were prepared to pay MORE than anyone else. Go figure! At least with a fixed price sale, you have the chance of negotiating downward and could walk away with the feeling that you may have payed less than anyone else.

I do however use eBay when buying parts for the Escort, but I know the value and what I'm prepared to pay and stick to it, though I have been known to get pi$$ed off with being outbid that I will play with the other bidder and drive the price up and then back out and leave them paying much more than they would have!

I use Gixen for bidding on ebay, set it for what I am happy to pay and it bids at the last second for you, gives you the best chance of winning at the price you want to pay.

but *occasionally* you pay less than you would in a shop.. If you know the price of the items your bidding on, and don't go near it there shouldn't be anyway to lose.

Yep you and and think the same but at auctions, sometimes people will pay whatever to get the item they want.  Can't remember what the buyers premium was at the car auctions but it was at least 15-20%, the car you purchased was without rego and quite a lot without a RWC. Midweek auctions were the best, go on a weekend and continually watch people pay way above market value.

I remember a mate who picked up a nice Statesman about 10 years ago. Car was low kms and immaculate.  He emptied a big tin of cigarette buts from his workplace into a bunch of plastic bags.  On the pre-inspection, he got to the car early, filled up every ash tray with butts then hid the open packets of butts under every seat in the car. It was just ripe with smoke stink. He picked up a bargain that day as there was little interest from other buyers.

agree... I didn't realise Grays was 22%...
Got my Maxima years back at the auctions mid week with Eric off Eoz back when fuel first hit the roof... dozens and dozens of SS/GTS commodores etc going for dirtc cheap... I shoulda got one instead of maxy, but didn't think of it..

Grays have some cheap starting prices to get you there ..... if you know the going price/s of the vechicle and set yourself a limit then they can be a good place to buy a vechicle ..but you carnt get carried away....if you missout its ohwell maybee next time

A "family legend story" that was told to us as kids was how grandad was buying a 2nd hand model T Ford. ..  not as an antique. ...  but in the same way someone might be buying some old clunker today. ...   we're talking maybe the 1930s in this story ??

Anyway. ..   apparently the gear shift was designed to "collapse / fold" or something. ...   Grandad collapses it and says the Model T is faulty. ...

So not sure how the hell this happens, But a couple of the lots I had won and paid for have been stolen from the premises?
I get a phone call today telling me that Its gone and Ive been refunded.
How in the hell do they let this stuff out the door without checking who has what? grrrrr

I wouldn't be surprised if someone who was owed money/goods was lent a key by an owner/ex-employee to recoup some of their losses.

In 2010 I sold a lot of collectable, rare, precious etc coins on ebay. Always set the auction to finish at 9pm on a friday night. Items always fetched higher prices. Some mint sets could be purchased cheaper at the Perth mint. In one auction for a mint set could have been purchased $180 cheaper from the Perth Mint..........go figure? 
I put in down to alcohol fueled bidding.
