Hey all. Here's the question I got.
I have two trailers one is my soft floor camper. And the other is just a standard box trailer. Currently the soft floor is registered as 750kg ATM. And the box trailer is unregistered.

I have fitted brakes to the soft floor and want to up the rego to 1.02t and the I want to rego the box trailer. I was told today that two options for the camper are

1 . MOD plate $250 plus rwc $50 which seems ridiculous.
2. Rwc and new trailer rego with new vin.

Now option 2 would be cheaper but I means I need to rego two trailers both with new vins. And buy two sets of plates.

Now after all that. My question is can I transfer the plates and vin from the camper to the box and new rego and new vin the camper. As I have only paid the camper rego about 2 months ago.

I know it's a bit dodge but at the end of the day its only a 750kg ATM trailer.

Yes, probably a bit dodgy.

Does the box trailer already have a VIN welded or stamped into the draw bar?

Dept of Transport are great for getting money out of you for bugger all, apart from shuffling some paper. I had a trailer that was badly rusted, so I did some upgrading. I replaced the hitch, drawbar, the box (made it a 7x4 from a 6x4), the frame and the suspension... oh, and the wheels. All that ended up being original was the the chassis number and the number plate.

That's pretty much what I've done to the box trailer. New draw bar axle guards wheels light mounts. The only original part was the tub and chassis. And it doesn't have a vin either.

If the trailer is home built, who decides what the V.I.N. is?
