On our current trip we have been on the road for 3 months, 9 to go and we have found most camp spots spoiled by rubbish has been caused by locals!  But we travellers seem to get the blame.  We especially found this sadly in Tasmania!  We saw it happen and the local authorities know it and warned other travellers about it.  So how do we stop locals?  We clean up where we can, but does this help or just make it better for locals when they next descend and again leave their mess.  We have been several times to tassy but never seen the locals so bad, plus saw and heard a bit of abuse directed to travellers just because the locals believe some camp sites are theirs?  What got me to put this topic on is a article in a 4 wd magazine about rubbish at camp sites.   Kevin

Sounds quite similar to the same problems people have with beaches and local thinking they 'own' them.

A: You can't/don't....

Sadly it's the 'way of the world'...

Just do the best you can; in cleaning up and keeping tidy; and picking less bog spots - and enjoy...

(Even Darryl Kerrigan managed to admire and exclaim "how's the serenity" - as the bugs were being zapped at his humble getaway at Bonnie Doon...)

You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. ...You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  ...Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like....  Welcome to the layer cake son.
