We spent a couple of weeks in Melbourne and surrounds after Christmas and into the new year. The verdict, not a bad place at all and will be excellent when finished. 
One of the highlights for us (a group of Sydney-sliders and outcasts from Brisbane) was the Queenscliffe Blues Train. Awesome night out.

It's a great night out, I've already let the boys at work know this is what we are doing for our Staff Christmas party this year.  For those unaware, it runs of an evening on the Queenscliff tourist railway, they do a spit roast feed at the station. you can then grab your drinks and jump on a carriage, each carriage has a different artist, mainly blues / roots music. halfway to Drysdale, they pull off into a siding, drain / top up fluids and then change to the next carriage. At Drysdale station they turn the engine around and you do it all again. By the end of the night you've been on four carriages and heard from four different artists and normally well lubricated! Can't wait to do it again!
