That's what I thought too when I seen one today.

After a quick read, it is a newly designed Discovery 'Sport' model. Designed to meet the compact SUV market. Much smaller footprint than its bigger brother.

Still manufacturing the traditional Disco!

"Rolls off the line..." In typical LR style - wouldn't start and the brakes didn't hold

You obviously aren't familiar with the Defender handbrake!  A simple & bullet proof drum brake on the transmission shaft which is simple and has the ability to brake all four wheels - unlike almost all other 4x4's.  It will hold in scenarios where your average Japenese 4x4 will have long since given up.

After nearly 40 years of "Land Roving" a thing I have learnt is that the most vociferous people commenting about the Landies perceived "problems" are the most ignorant in real knowledge of the marque!

Pull ya head in......GU's have the handbrake on the prop shaft..........and......we don't have to carry a spill kit with us for when it's  parked up for longer than 5 min......

Not fair.
As many of us know, the LR handbrake is incredibly effective.
It was just the locked wheels sliding in the oil that leaked out having similar results.

Besides all the jokes and I have never really like the defender (probably cause I don't fit) I still think it's a shame that regulators today have caused this model to cease production. Like the 70 series there's a place for rugged fourbies.

I've never owned a LR but I reckon they are the best looking 4x4 ever made. They are what a 4x4 wagon should look like. Now if LR had managed to put a decent engine like the 2.7 litre six from the Discovery plus a six speed auto in it I would have been sorely tempted.

All Nissan Patrols came out with the tail shaft hand brake, even the old Datsun Patrol G60's had a tail shaft style handbrake, not as effective as the later MQ ,GQ or GU.

TB48 GU's did away with the tail shaft handbrake. They use brake shoes inside the rear disc rotors.

Ask Nissan why.....

In the 70's my first 4wd was a series 2a shortie. You could go crazy accessorising it: second wiper for the passenger side; door locks, window locks; free wheeling hubs; extra tank to compliment the std 10 gallon one. Great gearbox though unlike the piece of cr$$ fitted to the series 3, on the other hand the late 2a and 3 Salisbury diff would have been nice. A great truck to learn about 4 wheel driving and mechanical repairs. Not sorry I owned it but!

Some of my very early driving experience was in a SWB series II. on a farm I used to work on the week ends.

No roof , no brakes.

Coming up to a gate, you had to double shuffle down to 1st, switch it off and coast to the gate....The trick was in stopping before the gate...VBG...
