My Camec Water tanks - I freakin' knew it!

I have two 59 litre camec water tanks.  Spent ages trying to work out why I kept running out.
Took one of the tanks out today.
Filled it on a flat surface.
Due to the how far the breather is recessed I can only get 56 litres into the tank.
Due to the position of the outlet I can only get 48 freakin' litres out of it.
Measured what was inaccessible in the tank (as pictured) EIGHT LITRES! !!!
Multiply this by two and my alleged 118 litres turns into 96 and I'm carrying 16 for fun. Not happy!  Tank makers should be a made to list usable capacity rather than volume of the tank

I was looking at these tanks at supercheap. Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure I find a tank with a better positioned pick up.

You are going to be just as disappointed when you do the same exercise with your fuel tanks.

If you're regularly running out of water, I doubt an extra 16 litres would make much difference.

Not sure about others ???. But that 16l in tight arse mode, would give myself and swmbo another night without a water stop.

Would you carry a gerry can of water on your camper that you couldn't access?

118 vs 96. I know which I would prefer.

That 22 litres represents a couple of extra days in the bush which means a lot to me.

No, I wouldn't. The tank in the Coota is a 250L stainless job, all of it accessible.

Fuel doesn't worry me as much as I'm sure toyota didn't sell me a cruiser with 120 litres of tanks that only hold 96 litres.

I'd look at getting a couple of stainless tanks made up to fit where your Camec tanks go.
They'd have a bigger volume, and could be made so that the volume is fully accessible.
Alternative, carry a couple of water jerrys that you CAN access.... ;D

Thanks Geoff.  Totally agree. Pioneer did end up going aluminum for that very reason.

Just tossing up whether to spend the money on that, new jockey wheel, hitch and a zipper repair or two or just upgrade.

Yeah the second fridge is for the ice. Love my scotch but like it with water.....
Next you'll be telling me I  should have bought a KK...Caught up with a mate who showed me his new to him cape York trailer hard floor recently. Now that was a nice well considered bit of kit!

Either as Tim says or fit  pick up hoses into the existing outlet points to the  lowest section of the tanks ..

Yep. Bought some bits and pieces today to see if I can get it drawing water from the very bottom of the tank and breathing from the very top rather than an inch and a bit from each.

Yep, draw out from one of the bottom holes and whatever capacity the tank is, you should be able to fully fill it.  Run the breather up a lot higher than the tank and put the water into the tank via a bottom hole as well ( garden hose fitting ). This way forces air out the breather and hopefully fully fills it. You'll know when you get water ( and no air ) coming out the breather.

Thanks all.
I sikaflexed an irrigation elbow in the outlet that nearly touches the base of the tank. Relocated the breathers to the highest point and mounted some uneven packers to tilt it to the outlet.
Trial run on the deck.
56 litres in (definitely no way are these 59L tanks as marked) and got out 56 litres minus about 2 cups. So I am about 16 litres up on where I was which is a reasonable result without the expense of custom tanks.

Spent $50 on John guest  fittings to make the reinstall neater and quicker.

Will be happy when they are installed and the 3 year mystery/saga comes to an end.

Agreed. Original rear tank is encased in a propeller plate guard. Front  tank which was installed by me is exposed.  Hoses are pretty well secured and protected. Plus i always carry a spare 20L jerry of drinking water just in case
