Should I go.

So we have planned to head to Kiama from Canberra this weekend camping and it is looking like raining. We don't get to go much and the 4yr is pumped. Plus this is the only weekend I have off between now and Christmas.

So the question is, Should I go?

If there is anywhere else within the 3hrs that is going to be better weather I would like suggestions.

Camping in the rain is better than not camping at all.

As long as you can pack up clean enough and dry everything properly later, all should be good.

My thoughts are " Do it anyway " and enjoy the time / experience away ... Just take the right gear / set up for the wet if it happens ..
Who knows you might have the camp site virtualy all to yourself, if others go by the weather forcasts too .

Get everything ready with the intention of going and then decide tomorrow morning once you have looked out the window and decided for yourself.

•   Some of our best trips have been planned on this way of thinking and we have had a fantastic time with quiet campgrounds (because everyone else pulled out due to the forecast)
•   Then there have been times I've woken up and you could tell the rain is going to set in and we didn't go.
•   But there have been other trips I took a punt and failed which turned into a miserable trip and had to pack up wet. (Agree with Bird that camping with kids in the rain is far less enjoyable than sitting under a trap with your mates drinking all day)

The forecast says only 1-5mm on Sat/Sun with a thunderstorm tonight. I would say go for it. It is quite nice up here in Sydney (Bankstown) today.

I would take a bit extra cover and a few board games or something for the little one to do if the rain does get set in but we took our 2 little ones camping ( 3 and 1 yr olds) and it wasnt so bad

It just means you have to plan the weekend a bit more. Take extra games, some movies to watch, a new toy. Maybe plan a trip nearby.

My kids are 8 & 10 now. We've been though plenty of wet weather camping. You just have to plan some more to keep them occupied.

Unless its days on end of driving rain. We once spent 4 days (short) of a week in Coffs Harbour due to the forecasted heavy days of rain. But the Kiama forecast doesn't appear to be constant rain.

Do it - and have a wet weather back up plan - trip to the local shops/café/fish and chip shop/cinema/soft play centre just in case.  Your kid will remember it as 'camping' anyway. Its nice to have quality time away with the family.

All of the above, particularly as it is the only chance before Christmas. Plus, if you don't go, you'll be wishing you did.

The BOM forecast looks to be quite a bit drier down towards Albury direction. I'm not familiar with the area so I can't help with suggestions though.

Get out there, and don't forget Mum might need something extra also. I know I get the blame for a dud weekend because of the weather! And maybe a short length of garden hose to wash down a muddy 4yo with a grin ear to ear!

You can always pull the pin early if it all goes to pot.

Got drenched badly once in a campground and never will i go out camping with kids in the rain again. The kids still bring it up 2.5 years later.

For us, if it looks like rain we just avoid the area or postpone.

Its just painful getting everything so wet to then have to come home and spend 3-4 drying and cleaning the canvas, tarps, walls, car etc. If it heavy rain you can't even go for a leak without getting drenched, feet and legs covered in mud. Packing up in the rain just sucks as well.

Hire a cabin if you still want to go and remember forecasts are generalised - areas in valleys tend to get much more water.

Its also a good way for the kids and wife to begin disliking camping being stuck inside for 2 days in the rain.. When she has to walk in the pissin down rain 400mtrs to the bog for a squirt, you'll never hear the end of it.

If you have a good sized annexe it may not be so bad - but theres no bike riding, etc to entertain kids.

camped at inskip point for our honeymoon
this is in the old dome tent
and it bucketed down absolutely everything was soaked through and through
went up to the laundromat next morning and chucked it all in the drier
not a problem
thankfully no more rain after that

another time at fraser
in an old old canvas army tent
the tent fully ripped in half from the wind and rain (first night of 5)
sewed it up with some straitened fishing hooks and had a glorious time

another at the kenilworth homestead
also in the dome tent
omg we had so much rain
managed to keep everything dry
next day the kids had a ball in all the mud and tracks full of water

another at rainbow beach
also in the dome tent
it rained that much and that heavy that the water was running down the sand hills and flooded the tent
the torrent of water was actually hitting the tent and spilling over the top bucket floor
lucky we had air beds so we just pulled everything onto the beds and floated the night through

EDIT:  To be helpful to the OP. Just go camping. We were once in a club that cancelled every trip at the sight of a cloud in the sky 3 weeks out. So we started just going anyway. Sometime it did rain, other times it didnt, but some of the best trips have being in the wet.
