I think i've done the majority of cd's we have here now (probably only a couple of hundred, so nothing compared to your lot) but next years outback trip will be a rocking good time I reckon. 8)

In MP3 format, @ 320Kbps, you should fit about 400 albums on a 64GB USB drive too.. I normally have two 64GB thumb drives plugged into the car stereo, and very rarely even listen to the radio these days.

I've been ripping about 350 more CDs

Too much work.
I was faced with the same dilema a while back.
Much easier to download the whole lot, and expand.
Most bands just got the whole discography.

Mumford & Sons, Little Lion Man came on randomly from Spotify as I was reading this post.
Never have those lyrics been more literal;

"But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really f.... it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?"

Yes, yes Triple J, you did completely F.... it up.

No hottest 100 in Australia Day?
What the f... are you thinking.... :(

Yeah, but the cost of  legally downloading that much music is a bit prohibitive, especially when I already own copies of the music...?

And illegal downloading is not only fraught with rubbish quality music, risks of malware, but is like stealing sausages from your local butcher, eh?

****ed if I could be bothered sitting down and ripping 350 cd's... lol
FWIW there wouldn't be 350 cd's of music I like and my local butcher has a copies of all of my tunes, and I got copies of his :D

If you torrent them it usually is, however, I have most of my collection from main frames at uni's from around the globe,
all ripped on good equipment in FLAC, which is lossless.

A CD ripped on an everyday PC , without a dedicated sound card, using crap like WMP, media monkey, audio grabber etc will
give you a terrible rip.

And I sleep at night in the knowledge that I have purchased 100's of LP's, then 100's of CD, and now I have them all again in a compressed, lossless format, forever.

Still illegal, and nothing to say the rips weren't transcoded from poorer rips, or that the person doing the ripping had a clue about what they were doing, or even what equipment they used.

A CD ripped on an everyday PC , without a dedicated sound card, using crap like WMP, media monkey, audio grabber etc will
give you a terrible rip.
Cds ripped with something like Exact Audio Copy (EAC) or even MediaMonkey, to FLAC, on a PC or laptop, will be at least as good, and possibly better than any you download, where you don't know what they used to make them. Sound card doesn't even come into the equation, it's a combination of CD drive capabilities, software being used and understanding how to make good rips.

And I sleep at night in the knowledge that I have purchased 100's of LP's, then 100's of CD, and now I have them all again in a compressed, lossless format, forever.

Tell it to the judge  ;D

Then this article pops up in my news feed this morning....

Apparently even when you think you're doing the right thing and paying for music, some lawyer comes out and says you're still stealing....

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/spotify-hit-16-billion-copyright-lawsuit-tom-petty-weezer-neil-young-songs-1070960

QuoteOn Friday, Wixen Music Publishing filed a lawsuit in California federal court that alleges that Spotify is using Petty's "Free Fallin'," the Doors' "Light My Fire" and tens of thousands of other songs without a license and compensation. The plaintiff is seeking a damages award worth at least $1.6 billion plus injunctive relief.

...

In reaction, Spotify has been questioning whether Wixen has really been authorized by its clients (including Andrew Bird, Kenny Rogers, and Jim Morrison's heirs) to take its aggressive actions. Songwriters have administrative agreements with Wixen allowing the publisher to negotiate licensing deals, but Spotify has pointed out these agreements are silent about litigation.

...

All this occurs as lawmakers turn their attention to reforming music licensing.

In late December, Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) introduced the Music Modernization Act, which among other things, would end the "notice of intent" process that's currently spelled out by Section 115. Instead, a database would publicly identify songs and potentially alleviate the way that digital services struggle to identify and locate co-authors of each of the tens of millions of copyrighted musical works. Under the proposal, digital services would fund a Mechanical Licensing Collective that would be granted blanket mechanical licenses. And rates would more closely hew to market value, with songwriters and publishers being granted audit rights.

Among song publishers, optimism for passage of the Music Modernization Act is strong not only because it is a bipartisan approach but, more importantly, because it has earned buy-in from the Digital Media Association, a trade organization that represents big tech players like Apple, YouTube, Amazon and, yes, Spotify.

Of course, the larger hurdle might be getting Congress to care enough about music licensing amid rancor on the budget, immigration, entitlement reform and so on.  Will a $1.6 billion lawsuit make enough noise to accomplish this? Stay tuned.

Kangaron mentioning Madder Lake the other day has had me going back to the music of the Sunday arvo pub scene in Melbourne, have always been a big fan of the  raw sound of good old hard rock, a few basic  instruments and a big stack of Marshalls. Bands like Chain, Carson, Lobby Loyde, Murtceps, Black Feather, The Meteors, Wild Cherries and one of my favourites The Aztecs. Loud and hard, bring it on

Yeah used to do Southside when i wasnt working, they were bloody great times wern't they. Most weekends for me in those days was Friday night at the Pier hotel in Frankston to see Thorpey, work Saturday morning, down to the Southside or the Southern Aurora if i was feeling tough enough, then into town for more live bands, usually the ones you had seen in the arvo, then out to one of the pubs on Sunday arvo, then back to work on Monday to rest up for next weekend
