MySwag advice to the rescue

About 18 months ago I was sitting on my lounge in New York City combing through these pages trying to learn as much as possible about how to outfit our camper trailer and 4wd for our trip in Australia. Originally planned for 3-6 months, we are closing in on the end of our 15th month on the road and 50,000km behind us.

We were beginning our journey on the Tanami week before last and stopped for lunch at Wolfe Creek Crater. There are no picnic tables there, so we were sitting on a picnic blanket when I noticed something under the trailer didn't look right.

My husband went to investigate and sure enough the bushes on one of our shocks were destroyed. Another bloke came over and confirmed our suspicions. They both had a look like we had a real problem... We were 200 kms out of Halls Creek with some heavily corrugated stretches between us and a service station.

"No worries" I said. We had a spare shock. My husband didn't believe me because it had been buried deep in our spares for the last year and he was pretty happy when he successfully pulled it out.




An hour or two later, we were back on the Tanami and headed to Alice Springs. There is no way we would have had that spare if not for this site, so big THANK YOU to all who contribute their experiences here.

For the record, we now have a spare shock, set of bushes and a spare set of nuts and bolts for the shocks too... Just in case.

Just read through your blog and was moved by your whale shark experience and that of your young boys

I read it out to my 9 yo and he said I quote " they seem like nice people dad, will they still be there when we go next year"

Great story, know that road so well. Alice Springs to Halls Creek.

It destroyed the rear shocks on our Pajero in 1998. We made to Halls Creek, but only just. The rear end just bounced around on the smallest bump. What a nightmare.
corrugations GRRRR. One of the most corrugated roads I have ever experienced.

Did the Tanami last may heading to Halls Creek  . Romped up at 80 to 100 kms thinking this is nowhere near as tuff as we had been told . Then we passed the graders & it was a tuff as we had been told . On the way back 6 weeks later & after 12mm of rain & road trains it was really ruff . Corrugations you could camp in . Well worth the run though  We paid $2.60 for diesel at that stage , & that's not funny
