Hi im thinking of getting the app for wiki camps if i get it on my iphone how do i also get it on ipad or do i need to buy the app again for ipad sorry im not savy in this department..
Do you think its worth it  arounf $8 i think?

Hi Bluejay,

Not sure about the iDevices, but I was able to pay once and install it on multiple Android devices (phone and tablet). Wiki Camps is great and well worth it, we used it to plan our recent trip and the comments and pictures from other travellers are great. We used to use the Camps 5 book but this hardly gets touched now that we have Wiki Camps.

The associated Fuel Map app is great too for fuel locations and recent pricing information.

Downloaded the App a few weeks back, for $8.00 why would you over think the decision to download? It's been really good so far, we have used two campsites from the app so far and found a few others that we will use shortly. All local to us but we didn't know existed. Like any 'wiki' it's only as good as the info added by all users, so like me, take the time to add your feedback and pics and we shall all be much better informed.

but how many of these apps require actual signal for them to work?

I know that the Hema app doesn't, yet can still track your position.

Yes wikicamps does track your position when there is limited signal, but some of the features such as comments, photos, etc need to be opened prior entering remote locations to be able to view.

Tripigy will run on ipad/iphone and tablet/phone with Android.

Better yet, we have more "legal" campsites then wikicamps. (independently verified)

And better yet, works completely offline, including descriptions and much more information then wikicamps.

Plus all the other benefits of Trip Planning, Blogging etc (offline as well) and doesn't require a GPS to work..

And at $2.49! quarter of the price...
(not that i am bias).

And there is huge works in progress as well as the guys have mentioned.

Wikicamps is fantastic and will work on all your iOS devices.

I have both Tripigy and wikicamps and find wikicamps to be far more responsive and quicker to use.

yeah the responsive is something we are working on. The problem relates to the amount of information we pull. (alot)

However the other problem is pulling data from the internet. If you turn off the internet and use offline its very very fast. Our next build will address these issues and ensure we aren't loading whilst holding up the background. When you load a place page it actually has to make calls for images, reviews and weather all the in background.

But certainly this is something we will be as fast if not faster, and as we move more data into the local store (i.e our reviews are kept locally).. it will get faster...

Still lots to do, hence why we've also left the price at a very low price..

I actually see Tripigy as a very different product to the other ones out there.

We originally built tripigy to offer a very different suite of features.. And the new social aspect side of things coming later this year will be important.

There's lots and lots more to come over the coming few months.. Its very excited times.

And we are excited now to have 60,000+ new members .. This means a huge amount of people on the road providing really good photos, and reviews without the extra backpacker stuff.

Plus we are moderated..

So as others have said only early days.. but we're really excited about where we are going and heading.

All you need to do is have the iDevices signed into the same iTunes account, then you can download it as much as you want.  I run Wikicamps on 2 iPads and an iPhone.

It doesn't seem to need Internet access to access most of the info - in writing this response I set aeroplane mode on and was still able to access details of camp sites but not live stiff like weather. Directions might be a bit iffy too, if not connected to the www.

Yes wikicamps will work offline if you have downloaded the content (maps, comments etc) to your device, providing your device has a GPS receiver. Some Ipads don't apparently.

Agree with most of the comments above. We have been using it for 18 months now and are very happy with the app. I agree - it uses GPS so don't worry about not having phone coverage. As with all these type apps it relies totally on user feed-back. If you find a good spot or a dodgy one you do need to make a comment when you have phone coverage.

As long as both devices (ipad and iphone) are registered to the same itunes/icloud account then yes, buy on 1 device and it will automatically download onto the device other. This is the case for all apps actually, even free ones.

Automatic downloads for apps is under "Settings" -> "Apps and iTunes Stores". On this page it will also show your Apple ID.

Some Ipads don't apparently.

Apple combine their cellular (phone) chip with their GPS chip.  Can't have one without the other.

I have tried Wiki Camps a number of times but am not too sure about the quality of the data at times.  So personally have Hema Explorer for the maps and Tripigy for the data - which so far I am really impressed with.  The combination of the two gives me the best of all worlds, great maps and great data.

We used it for our trip around Tassie this year. Found it excellent. The most useful thing being current/up to date feedback on the various locations.

It's a great product ... just beware of silly people opinions ... "There wasn't enough trees" ... "The water was too cold to swim" (middle of winter) ... and this was a good one about a hot artesian site ... "Water was too hot to swim would never go again!".  Funny to read ... until you realise they are serious!
