Camper Trailer Ladders

Bunnings sell a DIY utility tressell for about $60 . We use one as as a replacement for the ladder, it has multi uses, seating and storage underneath. with adjustable height and a large top and easy on the feet not like a ladder.

Another alternative to a ladder is is a wider seat step.  Ours is twice as deep as this pic I stole from a for sale ad.   Much more stable than a ladder.  I use one of those small fold up steps in addition to this, so very very stable for getting in and out of bed.

It has two legs which go through small holes in the canvas and into slots under the trailer, so not going to move on you once installed.  Very flat for storage.

I thought a ladder might make things a bit easier.

So if the ladders are perhaps a bit less stable than steps, then I wonder if attaching a disabled handrail like this to the bed floor near the mattress would make it easier:

Fair 'nough.  Ours is rear fold, so we don't have to climb over 

Any options for mounting a step higher? That way you would have a good platform to launch over top the better half.  Otherwise, something solid to hang on to always helps.

The horizontal legs of the step go through the vinyal side of the camper, and into slots welded onto hte side of the camper. Would be a big job to move  up and would mean a few extra holes in the vinyl. Looks like its going to be a safety rail at the top.

When investigating a new ladder we couldn't justify the cost to replace with one of the ones you are looking at. In the end we got one of these

It was the perfect height and very stable - at the time both our kids were under 5 so these 2 things were very important. The other advantage is that it works as a step ladder around camp for setup and pack up. Only disadvantage is that it takes up a little more room but for me this was off set in not having to carry two ladders.

When I bought my Camper it didn't come with a ladder for legal reasons, but I had a 4 or 5 rung step aluminium ladder at home which I tie to the bed frame and it's fantastic. (Same type of ladder the bid green shed or similar sell)

Just pure fluke it's exactly the same height as the bed frame and when setting up it's used to hang lights, move any tree branches in the way and hang kids swings etc. At Xmas & Easter when we go away with a large group people are lined up to borrow this step ladder as it just makes some jobs so much easier.

Not sure where you are located, but Kerry at Modcon (Brisbane) used to supply these ladders when he was manufacturing soft floor campers...he might have a spare one lying around.

Mind if I ask why

Wouldn't it be more stable and versatile with the rear leg still attached? And I could be wrong but it looks like that rear leg is just a piece of tube that folds back onto itself so not taking much more room than what is already there. And being vertical when folded out ladder would be in the same position anyway?

Just curious as I am looking for a new ladder and hopefully get the right one first time.

I did it because I needed a ladder that had deeper steps, yet still compact when all packed up.

I cut the back legs off because it wasn't stable enough, especially if the ground wasn't dead flat. I cut the top off because it was too tall and stood higher than the bed and if I got a smaller step ladder the steps would have been too low to get up onto the bed with ease.
It hooks onto the bed base in the same way that the original ladder did so it is very stable and has no chance of falling over. When it's all packed up it actually has a lower profile than the original ladder and weighs a lot less. It is now a lot more comfortable to stand on while making the bed, or simply getting in and out of bed as your whole foot is on the step rather than standing on a 40mm rung. I left the top part of the back legs there because the step locking mechanism locks into this to stop the steps from folding when climbing the steps.

It's ticked a whole heap of boxes for me.
