I find it works better to fill with boiling water to 'heat' it, empty it after 10 mins, and refill with fresh boiling water, and dogs..

That's the key to keeping a thermos hot.

Every time SWMBO would make the thermos up the bastard would be cold by lunch time. She never used to preheat it.
Like Bird does, if you can preheat for 5 to 10 mins your on a winner.

I got an old **** knows brand, but bout 15yrs old... still keeps the hotdogs hot at the end of the day...

that is definitly the secret, i have 2 stanley flask's, 1 for coffee and one for soup when working in Vic or Tassie in winter and they have never failed yet if you follow Birds process

Hi,
  One trip I put our 'cheapies' in to gumboots, just because it was a convenient place to hold them till morning coffee time.
When I pulled them out, they were quite warm on the outside. Coffee was still hot, but it demonstrated the case heatloss that occurs.
Now we usually wrap the flasks in some clothing or similar as a bit of extra insulation if we want them reallyand hot for a few hours longer.
Try it, it may save replacing one that otherwise is not performing as you want.

Just bought one from Kathmandu today 40% off which brought it from $60 to $36. Have never owned another to compare it to nor looked at any others, thought this morning I need one and stumbled across it so bought it. 1 litre. The best thermos I have is a cheap Target one with a glass thermos un screw the bottom and fill the space between
glass and plastic with expander foam then quickly screw the bottom back on. Then you have the best thermos made
Glass keeps heat better and the foam helps and protect great for 4wding. Had a couple of tries at this first one broke

Ha! Good idea with the extra insulation/protection but you should have let the foam expand out the bottom and once set cut it back level and then screw the bottom on

Hi,
    My next one will have a simple screw cap. These silly click pop down self pour caps have too many moving parts and hard to seat seals.
They are difficult to clean and leak if not reassembled exactly right.

Yep. Had a similar experience with a popup bath waste in a renter. Crap brass and it had corroded and broken off the cross casting support and dropped down and I thought  it might be a bath pull out. But guess what? Saved by the clever ancestors-

We got a couple of wide neck Thermos's from Aldi for the kids, seem to work well for baked beans or spaghetti. Otherwise the Thermos branded ones are good.

Tested the Kathmandu this morning and its looking good.

Put boiling water in it for 5 mins then tipped out and refilled at 9.45 last night. Checked this morning at 10 so a little over 12 hours and the water temp was 74 degrees which was plenty hot enough for a cup of tea.

Hi, I wouldn't go on holidays with out my Stanley 2 litres and my Thermos 1 litre I find that they keep hot all day.
I fill them up with boiling water and leave for at least 10 mins or longer, then refill them.
