Went there with a mate 2 years ago and he booked the accommodation thru airbnb. The first 2 nights we stayed on a boat at marina del ray in LA (cheaper than a hotel), then rode motorbikes up to San Francisco. He has been to USA several times and always does his bookings for accommodation thru airbnb.

We were there in early Dec. last year. Stayed at a fairly basic Hotel close to the Italian district. From memory it was about $300 Au./night This was for a single room with breakfast included. Cheaper options available in the Tenderloin which has the reputation of being a bit seedy and potentially dangerous.

was after some where near union square or fishermans wharf area want to stayclear of where dirty harry carved them up

Motel we stayed at was within walking distance of Fishermans Wharf, and a hell of a lot cheaper than the price you indicated. Not 5 star but quite OK. Again, try airbnb.

I stayed at the Radisson in Fishermans Wharf in November. Very comfortable and close to most things. Plenty to do around the area and public transport just around the corner. Not big $$$$ either. If you are going to Alcatraz book online asap. Enjoy

I've stayed around Union Square as it was convenient to the Convention Centre, head offices for companies I was meeting and major shops. Easy walk/cable car/BART/tram to Fishermans Wharf and everywhere else. Marriott, Nikko, Parc55 were all good. There was one at the end of Powell St near the cable car turntable that was very old which I don't remember the name of. SF hotels are usually pricy but on my last visit in August last year they were outrageous as it was the Flight event (air show etc). I ended up staying in Silicon Valley and catching the Caltrain each day.

Have you been before?

We stayed here xmas 18 months ago http://www.hotelcaliforniasf.com/ and very happy with it.. It was a best western hotel back then. Close enough to Union Square and good pricing...not sure how good current pricing is. I was there with wife and kids and there are homeless people around but absolutely no problems...the hostels they overnight in are further into Tenderloin district. They just like to chat more than their Aussie counterparts !

Have to pick your brain when you get back gronk. We are doing east coast in Jan 2016. Did west coast 2013.

Just remember that the price/s you see are usually pre-tax. Add 15% (CA) tax plus gratuities and factor in our dollar at approx 0.75 the Greenback and what seems like a bargain quickly looks less inviting. Booking.com is your friend.
Having said all that I would go back in a flash....................to visit.  ;D

LOL - I was there in 96, and also went there. Perhaps I saw you dancing on the bar?

I got separated from my mates coming out of a club on Folsom street and ended up standing round a barrel with a fire in it chatting to some of the hobo's in and around Mission St.  They were a good laugh...

A very pleasant way to spend a day is to get the cable car to the wharf then hire bikes and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. Have lunch then catch the ferry back (bikes welcome).

The free hop on/off bus also goes across the bridge and is a good way of seeing the sights and getting around.

Coventry Inn, San Francisco - Accommodations

Prices in San Fran can be scary, but this place was very good.
Corner shop very close, had a fantastic meal at a local sports bar round the corner and the hop on/hop off bus driver hopped us off right in front of hotel. A previous poster mentioned Alcatraz - book on line. Yes absolutely, and book as early as you can. We went to book the next day and found it was booked out for 10 days. The hotel managed to get some tickets for us (at a higher price) so we didn't miss out. It was a highlight of our stay in SF, but like a lot of the American tourist icons - too many people and long queue's.

Cheers
