What do I need to know to buy a 2nd hand camper trailer in QLD.

Does it need to be registered to me, do you do a change of ownership when buying or can you do this at a later date (when you get it home)??, this will be our first camper trailer when we buy one and it will be 2nd hand.

Cheers Stephen

Hi , current owner will have to fill out a rego transfer form you then complete your parts on it and keep one part of it , get a written recipt with all trailer info on it ie rego and vin numbers and make and model make sure it got a roadworthy certificate then take all that to transport office and swap details with them , plus make sure you have a good look over the trailer make sure everything works and functions as it should , happy hunting

If it has permanete gas make sure you get a certificate

Visit the TMR website.
The answer will depend if you are live in qld as well.
If over 750kg needs safety cert if under these are not required to transfer
Gas cert if plumbed gas needs to be within 3 months
14 days to complete transfer but ensure you have all details needed from prior owner before you leave I have always completed the transfer paperwork before leaving with it.  It will then be signed by both parties with details etc.

What hasn't been mentioned is that you need to check who really owns the trailer.

Check on this website

Personal Property Securities Registry

The site is a PITA to use, but take the time to get the VIN other identifying ID's from the trailer and run it through, also buy the certificates if it comes back as clear title (eg not financed, or used as an asset backing a loan).

Also check on the QLD govt website for there RTA (Roads, Traffic, Licensing etc...) and see if you can look up the rego of the trailer and who it's registered to.

All of this sort of data should line up.
If there is any search data and story that doesn't line up treat it as suspect and walk away.

No amount of fancy story telling we let you keep a trailer that is later recovered as stolen, under finance etc...

Thanks guys this information has been great.

I have requested the VIN number to background check for finance, the trailer has the roadworthy and gas cert done, we will be doing the transfer papers together if we buy it before we leave.
