Got smashed last night for about 15 -20 mins.. havent seen such strong wind and horizontal rain like that in a loooooooonnnnnggggg time...  Was hittin the windows at home pretty damn hard

We did as well and I will need to clean up tonight or tomorrow. I know there is a tree limb on my garage, found it there this morning at 5.00am and couldnt do much in the dark. It looks to of done no damage to the roof. Its got really cold in the last hour as well, might have to find some long pants

Victorians are being urged to park their cars under cover and secure any loose items outside their homes on Monday before damaging winds sweep through much of the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning as it expects a strong cold front to approach south-west Victoria on Monday night and rapidly cross the state on Tuesday.

Ahead of that front, gail-force northerly winds will strengthen, with gusts expected to peak at 120km/h in Alpine areas and 100km/h in the south-west district and parts of the Wimmera.

On average, though, the winds are likely to reach 50-60km/h in the south-west and 60-70km/h in the central and eastern parts of the state.

Specifically, the Bureau says affected areas include Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Seymour, Maryborough and all Alpine resorts.

Ahead of the damaging winds, the State Emergency Service is urging Victorians to:

    Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
    Secure or put away loose items around the house, yard and balcony;
    Keep clear of fallen power lines.

The front is not likely to bring significant rain as it quickly moves across the state. So while you might want to pack an umbrella on Tuesday, the emphasis should be on wearing a warm scarf and coat.

Melbourne should only see 1 to 5 millimetres, says senior forecaster Michael Efron, while the outer eastern suburbs might get up to 10 millimetres. That rain – together with a possible thunderstorm – is expected in the afternoon, after a mostly dry morning.

A top of 16 degrees is forecast for Melbourne, which will probably be reached in the morning before the winds and showers send the apparent temperature down to around 5 or 6 degrees, says Mr Efron.

Other parts of Victoria will get more rain, with the bureau forecasting around 5 to 15 millimetres in the southern and mountainous regions.
