Vehicle Mounted Wind Out Awning

After seeing 1 of these ( Fiama type ) mounted on the side of a Hi-Ace van I thought it was a great idea, really easy to set up and pack up and could be used as a kitchen awning for overnighters as well as daytime stops etc.  I'm not interested in a bag awning with the associated ropes,pegs, and rolling them up by hand etc.

So has anybody tried these and actually mounted 1 on their vehicle roof racks and if so how did you do it and did you have any problems with it ?

Never seen one on a vehicle before.  Seen plenty on buses and motorhomes and caravans.  Wouldn't they be too heavy for a vehicle?  What with all the winding mechnism and supports etc?

The problem is due to the weight you have to take twisting into account which then would be further exxagerated at speed

If you look at most Fiamas and the like that are mounted corrctly on vans and hiaces and the like it is more of a sail track system so the wieight is spread over the entire awning rather than just 2 points as it would be mounted on a vehicle

In regards to the above points, if it was mounted to a long rack, it might alleviate the problem (if it is actually a problem).

You can get side mounted awnings without ropes and pegs

yea the fiamma don't like to be twisted
most ones i know of have been mounted onto utes with a  solid backing normally of aluminium (custom ladder rack headboard)
you will still need to peg or rope it down as the wind will pick it up and bend it over the car
if you break the arms replacements cost big $$ as you have to but the complete arm assembly   
set it up properly 1st time and it should last

Had a Fiamma awning on our Dove Outback, very quick setup.
Another possible negative other than weight is their price in comparison to the standard type roll out awning.
But if money is no object then ....

Only needs one Rhino type bar! Saw it at a camping show a few years ago & it looked pretty neat & well made.

While these pole less/rope less shades look great in showrooms, how practical are they in the real world especially for anyone who spends any time on the beach?

I always peg my shade down even in the calmest of conditions as over the years I've seen that many people not use rope/pegs because the conditions were 'so calm' only to see there shades blown over the roof of 4WD's by wind that's came out of nowhere.

Cockatoo Canvas bloke made one and left it up and drove up the road up to 80kph and it was ok...
but I don't know if he is still around.

You rolled it out, then 2 arms came out and clipped onto the end of the awning - self standing..

Takes less than one minute & only needs one person. First time I set ours up took about twenty seconds, can do it in about ten! Pack up is so simple the "roll up" part can be done one handed. I'm in my 60's too, so you don't need to be Hercules.
