Good evening everyone
With our first Cape York trip planned for end July/beginning August, I was wondering if you had to rug up during the night? We have two small boys who don't sleep in one spot or under a blanket, so I was wondering if I need to take warm PJs for them? We will be travelling in a Ecomate FF.

Any advice is welcome! Thanks everyone.

It wouldn't hurt or he kids, no need for the adults. I used to go up in June/July, all I had on top of my swag was a sheet.

I did the Cape in Sept 14 on a motorbike.

The only time felt cold was at The Lions Den on our first night.

Other than that, it was fairly warm.

I wore shorts and singlets the entire time, only time we were cold was West of Rocky at a Nat Park we stayed at on the run home

Have done three trips up the Cape: August/ September, June/July and September/ October. Only ever needed a sheet at night and if camped on the coast with some wind (Cape Melville etc) a cotton blanket at 3am can help.

We went July school holidays last year, jumpers and speelingbags until Lakeland low teens over night there, singlets and shorts to the top and back, then back in the jumpers at the lions den. It got to 8 deg in the hills there.

Didn't make it to the cape - only to Cookton/Laura - in July / August last year.

Flannels much appreciated!!!

Cheers,

Sorry, I should clarify. The above is for the Cape, that is once north of Cooktown. When at the tip you are only about 150 km from New Guinea and 1000 km from the equator, so usually nice and warm. Still scouts moto says "be prepared", which is always good advice.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think, as always with kids, it's better to have spares of everything just in case.

Hey MrsWilson79,

Interested to hear about your Ecomate and going to the Cape. I have nearly decided on buying the FF, they look a great camper for the price.

Have you done much off road driving with it? You hear you many rummors about the the build quality of imported trailers and the risk of damage on rutted tracks - I have been asking myself the question - would I take that trailer to the Cape?

Your and others views?

We are planing our first trip - Brisbane - Birdsville - Flinders Ranges and hoping to take the Ecomate.

Hey White Beast, good questions about the Ecomate. We love it so far but haven't done any off-road yet. Will ask Wilson79 to answer.

Would love to hear more about your trip out to Birdsville - Flinders Ranges, as that is also a trip we would love to do.

Cheers

Cheers,
We have just had our F/F Broadwater camper out to Cameron's Corner last week.
We drove a maybe 1500ks of dirt. And several hundred of corrugation. Not as bad as Cape York corro (IMO) but still substantial.
We had two issues.
1. The wiring under the camper was/is attached with cable ties to the chassis. Over corrugation the floor of the front storage boxes must hit the chassis/ cable ties and severs them. Had to re cable tie them a few times. Now I am back. I will fix this with some conduit and screws etc.
2. Dust in the side opening doors. This is minor. I could have tensioned them up more. But then they are a mongrel to open and close.
No dust in the actual sleeping area. Just side opening doors.
Took 2 minutes when I got home to blow it out with the leaf blower. :)
I will add we have done some water crossings in it too. No water ingress. (Probably about bull bar depth on my patrol. )
Also we have travelled through some Torrential rain. No issues with water ingress.
All in all pretty happy with how it faired.
We were travelling with friends in their new toy - (both their van and our camper are fairly new and have done a similar amount of trips so far. A new Aussie made semi off road van. Their list is substantially longer than mine.
Always give 100%... Unless you are giving blood.. then it may not go so well...

Hi mate, no we haven't don e any major off road or dirt trips as yet so hard to comment at the moment. Before our cape trip I will be replacing the no name shocks and that will be about it.As I have a company car I wont be doing any hard-core tracks and will be mostly taking the by pass tracks as I don't want to have a conversation with our directors that I have broken their car!!!..

With the FF just be aware that the are heavy and the tow ball weight can be up there so you will need to make sure your tow vehicle is capable..

Regards,

Wilson79
