Ok my Dell has died ..it's a home PC with a nice monitor.

It beeps 4 times each time I try start it . I have everything backed up to hard drive so all good ;D

We have apple everything except this home PC and I am thinking if a iMac to finish off the compatibility.

We surf the net - don't download music or movies
I do invoices and email
Manage photos
That's about it.

Anyone have good or bad experience with the iMac

Please don't start an apple / Microsoft debate ..I am a very basic and simple user so apples restrictions don't bother me..in fact I think they save me from myself ;D

4 beeps indicates faulty ram.

Could not get the monitor to power up either just sat in power save mode.

Once you go mac, you never go back.

Went from PC to Mac About 3 years ago. Never had a problem.
It just works! Everything just works.
Personally I would never go back to a PC

I also do not download music movies etc... I do however borrow pieces of movies and music from people I have never met in places I have never been to.

A recent Choice survey rated the Mac as most reliable and user friendly from memory.

I doubt you will regret the decision to buy a Mac, very reliable hardware and OS.

it might not until the post check has happened.

Pop the case open and remove/replace the ram sticks.. try again.
if that fails, run with 1 stick at a time...

Theo,

Have had Mac since 2008. Have all Mac types....IMac,Macbook,Ipad,Iphone,Ipod,ITV,Airport backup units....
Multiple units of most things across the whole family.

Apart from user issues, have had no issues of any significance(reliable)..all integrate well.....and the family enjoy.

Theres plenty of topics already on this subject mate but when you get sick of your current pc playing up (or your wife gets her own way) then I also say, once you go mac you won't go back!

We did and haven't regretting it one bit. We also have apple everything in the house, including apple tv and as someone else said, it all just works. We download music, movies, software etc. Use 100's of bit torrents and have never had a problem. Nothing, zilch, not one hic cup.

Our iMac purchase came about the same way.......wife wanted one right or wrong....I kept repairing the old PC's........I gave in eventually and wanted to hate the iMac from the moment she bought it..........I simply can not fault it.  ;D Bloody women ;)

how do you do your invoices? I dont think quickbooks have a mac version, however you can use it online I think. You can get a MYOB but a few years is was slightly different. Of course excel is available for mac if you use that.
I went to macs 12 years ago and Im more productive on my own system now that work PC's

Snapman007

This is hard for me to say  ;Dbut I'm now 7 years Apple and have forgotten most swear words I invented.

Just factor in 3 years of Microsoft anti virus and operating system pay-ups  and Apple give you a free computer with the highest res monitor and a computer that just does what you want. Under 1 min and your comp is powered up and emails in the in box.

I'm not using for business now but if someone offered me $1000 a year to go back to MS I would knock it back. I could definetly use the money now  but don't need the angst.
But the stress relief would be a bonus when I throw it at the neighbours barking dogs. :-*

I use Quickbooks online for my business. It is really just the pc version tweaked to run on Mac. They have finally got it working smoothly, it was very clunky for the first two years using a third party app to open, it was always crashing.

The downside is the shortcuts are pc based with a clipboard in the app. So you can't copy stuff from QB and the move to another app (mail, notes etc) and paste there.
This drives me nuts, but hey they are slowly getting it better.

As others, we only have Apple products in our home, can't really fault them. They work, simple as that. I don't have the time or interest in pulling the lid off a computer to fix it. I just want it to work. The few times we have had problems, they have always fixed for free and we have had recalls on things before they were a problem. Can't speak highly enough of Apple really.

Switched from a PC to an IMAC about 4 years ago and best thing I ever did!
Took a little while to get used to it but after that no issues at all and still runs as quick as the day I bought it. Every windows PC I have owned just got a slower and slower after every Windows (bloatware) update to the point where you have to upgrade the hardware. With the MAC I just upgraded to Yosemite and it actually got quicker!!
The other thing I hated about windows is most of the time the damn thing would not turn off and I often found the screen still on in the morning with a message like would you like to close blah blah.

dales133

You can still run winblows as a separate stand alone operating system as well... can't do that on the opersition

bergersau

Jetcrew, I'd suggest running memtest86+ overnight to properly test the ram in your PC.
Get it from here
http://www.memtest.org/

You'll need to put it on a bootable  USB stick and boot the PC from that and it looks like an escapee from the early '90s.
BUT it is the best way to isolate memory problems in a PC.

On another note..
Doesn't anyone else here use Linux?

Just my 2 cents worth.

- a bit unfair blaming any operating system for a hardware issue like ram not being adequately seated. I know the OP didn't declare this but just pointing out the diff between hardware and software issues. And given both Apple and dell outsource their manufacturing to Foxconn and Co there really isn't a lot of difference between both firms hardware/componentry quality. These days.

-for a user that runs very uncomplicated programs and a few browser/cloud based apps any operating system surely will suffice, even Linux!

- if your a non tech savvy user who is happy to pay for comprehensive ongoing software/hardware support I think you have already answered your query when the time comes to move of from your dell. There is no doubt Apple do this business model very well, possibly best of all.

-personally I have gone commodore > Mac > windows > Linux (with various windows Virtual machines) . Currently replying to this thread using an Apple iPad because I got it for free and it's a more that adequate tablet for web browsing. As a tech person however the limitations of the walled garden combined with a job working on software which is windows centric and my hobby with tinkering makes me a Linux/Mac/win/android person. After all why not have the best all platforms have to offer?
