Looking through an autobarn cattledog & came across this.

https://media.autobarn.com.au/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image/500x500/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/g/sg-ext52b.jpg

It says to protect your diesel engine.  ???

Is it just for wank factor or is it a genuine gauge with reasonable importance.

I'd never seen this before & am wondering why it would be important to monitor the exhaust temperature  ???

If you have a 3ltr Patrol it's mandatory.
I personally wouldn't own any diesel without one.

Without see the read up on this gague, I would guess that is a EGT gague ( exhaust gass temp )

An EGT gague is real handy on turbo engines as you can drive the thing and regulate the exhaust temp with your big right foot. Less exhaust heat translates to less engine/water heat.

What are the units on the gauge?   (3-13).   That would annoy me.

edit:  x100 deg C.   Doh, should have looked more closely.

On an older vehicle I could see the value but on a modern diesel would not the computer keep things like this in check ?????

Hi all

if your towing i would put one on

imo something that the normal day to day driver doesn't know is that the engine will explode if the egt gets to high
max egt on a toyota is about 550 deg
nissan patrol about 650 deg

anything over that has the potential to destroy an engine

EG.if your towing down the highway then hit a big hill you hit the accelerator and lose speed half way up so you go back a gear and give it some more fuel and still lose power what are your egts doing. getting ready to detonate your engine.

so my advise is fit one

easy to fit and most aftermarket exhaust systems have a bung in them to fit a egt sensor in

if you drive an automatic fit a larger oil cooler the cooler the auto the longer it will last
for better performance and cooler egts fit an aftermarket intercooler the standard factory units are crap
to save some bucks $$ instead of putting on a 3 inch exhaust just swap out the muffler box to a high flow unit most new 4x4s have large systems on them standard anyway

chip and exh $3000.00 ish

Ads Tips
exhaust mod max $500.00
intercoolers from  $750-$1100 depending on car
oil cooler if you need one $300.00
egt gauge $50-$350

total $1600 to $2250

total power increase and fuel savings 5 to 35%
best increase i saw was a bt50 3ltr td with pwr intercooler and hi muffler upgrade easy 35% (same as chip and exh)

take from this what you will
hope it all helps

Your quote  on temps ( nissan/toyota) would depend on where the probe is placed also. Most are in dump pipe, and on a nissan 3l I wouldn't be going anywhere near 550. I keep mine below 500. When not towing its never an issue really.

good point yes probe should be in around dump pipe

the nissan can be pushed a bit higher but safety first is always a good idea
thanks oldmate

imo the patrol was primarily built as a tow vehicle with a large towing capacity no wonder so many grenade

If you are serious you need one that has an alarm that you can preset to come on at a predetermined temp.  Otherwise they are like all other gauges.  Only useful when you look at it  8)

My 1kz had an auberin gauge that could be programmed for all manner of stuff that I couldnt understand but the best thing was I could set the alarm to come on at a certain point (600 on mine was normal) and also trigger a LED light on the dash.

Good bit of gear, just hard to find the right spot for it.

Even if you are running a std TD its quite an eye opener to see how high the temps can get up a big hill with a load and a hot day!

Highly recommended.

Yep agree dazzler. I have a autron in mine which I have set to alarm at 550. It is a good guage but a bit exy, and probably more exy now that redarc have purchased the guage side of the company autron. But I like mine, it does egt and boost for turbo, also has one more sensor that I could put in say water temp or Intercooler or glovebox, but couldn't be stuffed.

IMO If you run an older engine its a must, if you are running a modded newer engine also a must.
I have a 1HZ running a turbo so for me it was a no brainer.
I run a Autron EGT & Boost gauge that sits pride of place on top of my steering column, you look at it every time you check everything else. It goes red when it reaches your set temp.

I have an EGT gauge fitted to my late model common rail 3L patrol and I think it is a great addition to help keep the vehicle running safely within its limits. As said most of the time you need not worry about it but when towing or gunning up big hills you will be surprised how quickly high the temps can go.
Mine is preset to alarm at 590 with an LED indicator which lets you know to back the right foot off.

no wonder i couldn't find autron gauges on the autron site didn't know that redarc took them over
do like this gauge and used to fit them to all turbo kit upgrades as standard
best bit about the autron was you could get up to 3 gauges in one

The above posts have said it all. You will be surprised how hot it gets, and how little your water temp moves. I think they are required if towing.

You nailed it Heath.  These modern diesels really need both and I reckon from the factory.

I hope redarc can write a non geek manual for the autron.

Interestingly, my Touareg had two temperature gauges as standard, for water and oil.
