Hi,
A group of us are going to tassie for a new years trip starting at the Falls Festival and heading around from then. so the trip will start around the 1st of jan next year. I am hoping to get a base camp just out of Hobart somewhere for a few days then up north to around cradle mountain. Where we are going canyoning which should be awesome fun.
Our group will be swmbo and myself in our Conqueor  :cup: and anopther 3 couples in tents.

So my question is around that time what are my chances of finding Free camping? both around Hobart happy to travel as i HATE caravan parks. and around the north end of cradle. I know their isnt alot of free camping around up their. But how busy dose it get? and if i do need to stay in Parks will i need to book for 4 sites or can we wing it. I have been reading old post for a while know and am starting to get worried

Thanks

Virtually all the good to great places are taken by locals from xmas to Australia Day.  They even set up tents to save the spots.

Anything coastal will be gone.  You can get some good places inland.  Send DannyG a PM.  He knows of some good spots around Mathinna.

If you can put it off till after Australia Day you will have a lot more fun..

Bugger. If you base yourself away from the coast you will be ok. Then day trip to the coast.

I'm not going to lie to you Marge.

Hi,
Near Cradle Mt you can camp at Lake Barringtonfor free, but Wings Wildlife Park, although further away, may suit your needs better. It is commercial, but looks ok.
Depending on the space you need, bush camps can be found mostplaces.
Cheers

Austastar, as long as you're willing to be flexible, you'll find places you can just pull in at.  Install camp wiki and go from there.  We gave up on booking or pre-arranging a while ago, and always find spots.  You just have to be flexible.

Near Cradle Mountain, we stayed at O'Neill's Creek. Free camp with a 2 or 3 day limit. Beaut grass, a creek, tall trees, but only a dunny in the way of facilities. I did hear that the bloke who bought the old hydro camp about 300m up the road had a big whinge (cos he had no customers) and the council then introduced fees here, and the whinger collects them! Out of Hobart, they may open up the racecourse when it gets busy, and a bit further away the caravan park at Snug was a beauty. I reckon they will all be busy in January though. Loved Tassie, can't wait to go back and see the rest - only had 11 weeks last time...

Our first trip to Tassie before moving here was in the Xmas new year period and we didn't have many problems finding spots at all. One spot which was really good and very close to Cradle was Wilmot dam. We stayed there for 3 nights and never saw anyone. Plenty of spots around the Mole Creek area too.
