STONE GUARDS

Am seeing more and more different variations in stoneguards these days, and latest craze seems to be the full checkerplate/propeller plate instead of the mesh type. Has anyone had any experiences with the new ally plate ones ??

My take is you want to absorb the energy of a stone, with a mesh/soft style guard. A solid plate is just going to fire said stone at near enough the same speed it hit.

But in answer to your question, no I have no experiences with the ally plate ones.

thats what i would have thought too, to slow the deflection down.

l use the rubber strip that is used to protect the springs on a trampoline . lts soft to deflect the stones but strong enough to handle the punishment gibbers dish out . As long as you use the nylon webbing impregnated belting it will be strong enough

Weeds l thought that until a gibber bounced off the CT , smashed the back window , only 50 km up the Birdsville Track . for the next 3500 Km we sucked dust . Roll of race tape on the track $20  . On our return to home it cost $580 for the new glass , $45 for the new dust filter , & 3.5 years later it still smell of the track . Only when the air con is on now .
Not Bling , sensible precaution when traveling on gravel roads or the black top for that matter  .

Stones will bounce off the alloy ones, but there are plenty of hard surfaces on the front of a camper to bounce rocks off. I will be fitting a Stone Stomper before our next big trip that included dirt roads, in addition to the mesh guard that came on the camper.   http://www.stonestomper.com.au/

er, probably could have worded a little better.........totally agree with stone guards (not that I have one fitted yet). the ally ones just look like bling to me

if I do an extended trip where I need a stone guard it will more than likely be stone stomper or a home made version of it

l now have a sheet of Perspex with sponge spacers to totally cover the rear window  & gibber deflecting rubber stone guards . Enough is not enough sometimes .

they are custom made for each setup........I assume its the trailer side that is custom and the tug side would be pretty much the same for all tugs therefore changing tugs would be a big issue.

Haven't you fitted one yet Weeds. Bloody hell you have been talking about it long enough. My stone stopper is doing a great job sitting on the back of the 200 in the shed. No stones here.
